Fresh facts have continued to emerge on reasons why the Vice-Chancellor of the Imo State University, Prof Anwuzie was recently fired.
\nGovernor Rochas Okorocha in his first salvo after taking oath of office for a second term, summarily dismissed Anwuzie barely a year after his confirmation as substantive Vice-Chancellor of the state owned varsity.
\nThe controversy trailing Anwuzie’s appointment has resurfaced thereby colouring his unceremonious exit. Despite postulations about reasons behind untimely exit from the Institution, Trumpeta can reveal that a recent disturbing fee imposed on the students a day before Okorocha renewed mandate for a second tenure was the reason behind Anwuzie’s sack.
\nThe former ASUU national chairman who braced all odds to be retained as VC after he received kicks from the university community for not obtaining a Phd, a prerequisite for qualification for the post, however got what he never bargained for from the governor over his alleged lot to re-introduce payment of fess in IMSU.
\nApart from other issues raised which reportedly caused cold war between the governor and the VC, the introduction of compulsory On Line Registration of Courses for Students in which the students are expected to pay the sum of N19,500) to the school coffers, was the last straw that broke the camel’s back.
\nAccording to a memo from the Registrar signed by one Emeka Ijionye to all Deans, HODs and students also copied to the Vic-chancellor, Deputy VC, All faculty officers, each student is expected to comply with the payment directive as agreed by the resolution adopted by the University Senate on the above subject matter during its regular meeting held on Wednesday May 27, 2015.
\nThe compulsory payment order from the school management dated Thursday May 28, 2015 requested the students to pay into account of Diamond Bank, Zenith Bank and IMSU Micro Finance Bank. Furthermore, failure to comply will see the affected student not writing his\/her forthcoming second semester examination.
\nThe action of Awuzie put paid to speculations in the public domain about withdrawal of free education in higher institutions in the state. Despite that Okorocha has denied the report, Anwuzie’s indirect introduction of compulsory fee of N19,500, according to top government sources was in contrast to the vowed free education mantra of the Rescue Mission.
\nFurther revelation stipulated that the improper manner Prof Anwuzie handled the implementation of the compulsory payment did not go down well with the governor who opted to flush him away from the system.
\nAnwuzie was reported to have objected to any measure to re-introduce payment of fees in IMSU when induced by the governor to do so. Anwuzie’s latest volte face after Okorocha had denied plans to abandon free education led to his sack as IMSU VC.
\nMeanwhile, there has been an atmosphere of extreme joy and gladness among students and especially the lecturers of Imo State University Owerri over there recent removal of her former vice chancellor, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie.
