As the 2019 election gathers momentum, opinions vary as to who amongst the current\u00a0contenders is best qualified, at a time like this, to lead Imo State. Equally critical and important\u00a0is the election of the right candidates to lead at the Federal, State, and Local Government levels.<\/p>\n

Regardless of anyone\u2019s political affiliation, Nigerians especially Imolites should meticulously\u00a0vet their voting conscience to identify honestly the candidates, for any public office, who are\u00a0most prepared, genuine, passionate and sensitive to the needs of our people. This campaign\u00a0period will be dubbed the year of the \u201coutsider,\u201d meaning the year of the non-establishment, non-traditional, and non-mainstream political candidate. Regrettably many people still feel that<\/p>\n

Nigeria is not ready for a female president or governor. The question is \u201cif not now, when?\u201d<\/p>\n

With all due respect to progressively thinking males, I dare say that people with anti-female\u00a0mindset are either na\u00efve, unrealistic, or antiquated in their thinking. They conveniently pretend\u00a0ignorance of the damage done to Nigeria due to the rather nonchalant and lack-luster governance\u00a0of previous administrations led by males. While this does not in any way suggest that all males\u00a0are incapable leaders, it is regrettable that our history is replete with facts of sordid and inept\u00a0male leadership. Ideally, and as a matter of principle, voters should be more concerned about\u00a0who will get the job done, regardless of their gender. The non-level playing field has always put\u00a0women at a disadvantage, as the economic-political machinery has been designed, engineered,\u00a0constructed, and piloted by males.<\/p>\n

Women all over the world have continued to make immense contributions in all fields of human\u00a0endeavor: aeronautics, science & technology, engineering, mathematics, computer science,\u00a0medicine, nursing, business, religion, international relations, arts\/music\/entertainment, athletics,\u00a0and, yes, politics. Notable among the women Prime Ministers and Presidents are Golda Meir of\u00a0Israel, Indira Ghandi of India, Pratibha Patil of India, Julia Gillard of Australia, Margaret\u00a0Thatcher (the \u201cIron Lady\u201d) of Great Britain, Benazir Ali Bhutto of Pakistan, Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf of Liberia. Great Britain is currently being led by Prime Minister Theresa May, while Germany is led by\u00a0Chancellor Angela Merkel. The tenures of these great women were mostly peaceful, inclusive,\u00a0ethical and progressive.<\/p>\n

There is a litany of other women \u2013captains in their respective fields, who have shaped or\u00a0influenced history by their immense contributions to society in Africa.<\/p>\n

  1. Adunni Oluwole \u2013 The Human Rights Activist who fought for workers during the<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Nigerian general strike in 1945<\/p>\n

      \n
    1. Hajiya Laila Dongoyaro \u2013 The woman who fought for the rights of Northern\u00a0Nigerian women and the poor.<\/li>\n
    2. Alimotu Pelewura -The uneducated fish seller who fought for women\u2019s right to vote and\u00a0against taxation.<\/li>\n
    3. Madam Nwanyeruwa is the woman who instigated a short war that is often referred to as\u00a0the first major challenge to British authority in West Africa during the colonial period.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Some call it the Aba women\u2019s riots and some call it the Women\u2019s War.<\/p>\n

        \n
      1. Funmilayo Ramsome Kuti \u2013 Woman Activist- \u201cShe was a woman nationalist whose feminism and democratic socialism led to the creation of The Abeokuta Women\u2019s Union<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        (AWU) and later Women\u2019s International Democratic Federation (WIDF), organizations\u00a0and movements that aided Kuti to promote women\u2019s rights to education, employment and\u00a0to political participation\u201d.<\/p>\n

          \n
        1. Margaret Ekpo was Nigeria\u2019s women rights activist, social mobiliser and a pioneering\u00a0female politician in the First Republic. Beyond ethnicity, Margaret gathered women and\u00a0encouraged them to protect their interests by taking part in the political advancement of\u00a0the nation. In an era of a male-dominated movement towards independence, she played\u00a0major roles as a grassroots and nationalist politician in the eastern Nigerian city of Aba.<\/li>\n
        2. Queen Amina is described as a legend\/warrior queen who symbolized the spirit and\u00a0strength of womanhood.<\/li>\n
        3. Yaa Asantewaa \u2013 The commander in Chief and Queen mother in the Ashanti Empire in<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          Ghana. She was noted for the “War of the Golden Stool” which she led against British\u00a0colonialists.<\/p>\n

          I urge every woman, and indeed every well-meaning man, and all youths to give women a\u00a0chance by electing a woman as the next President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Women\u00a0should also be elected as Governors of states where they are gubernatorial candidates. Let\u2019s not\u00a0define women\u2019s ability to govern by their gender, but by their accomplishments and preparation\u00a0to serve. Electing women into national, state, and local positions will set Nigeria on the path to\u00a0national healing, economic recovery, and social integration \u2013 so let\u2019s give women a chance!!<\/p>\n

          As\u00a0the saying goes, sometimes the best \u201cman\u201d for the job is a woman!<\/p>\n
