Workers and management of the Imo Transport Company (ITC) on Friday, May 8, 2026 staged a peaceful protest against Transpower Electricity Distribution Company over what they described as \u201cunjustified and outrageous\u201d monthly electricity bills slammed on the company.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The protest, which took place at the company\u2019s operational headquarters along the Owerri-Onitsha express road, in Owerri, saw staff members carrying placards with inscriptions such as \u201cStop Exploiting Us,\u201d \u201cEstimated Billing Must End,\u201d and \u201cGive Us Fair Electricity Charges.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Transpower Electricity Distribution Limited was accused of issuing inflated bills that do not reflect the company\u2019s actual power consumption.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
According to the workers, the increasing electricity charges are negatively affecting the company\u2019s operations and adding to the financial burden already faced by transport operators amid rising fuel and maintenance costs.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A representative of the company stated that despite the irregular power supply in the area, the State owned transport company continues to receive what it considers excessive monthly bills.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cWe can not continue to pay huge amounts for electricity we hardly use. The bills are becoming unbearable and are affecting our business activities,\u201d the representative said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
They further revealed that in March 2026, the electricity provider brought an estimated bill of #334,941, only to come in April 2026 with an outrageous bill of #637,343.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Also, it was disclosed that the ITC only comes to light from one air conditioner, one refrigerator, with lighting bulbs. Therefore, they raised eyebrows why such bills would rise to that amount for the itemized objects used in the transport company.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The protesters called on the management of Transpower Electricity Distribution Limited to review the billing system and ensure consumers are billed according to actual usage.<\/p>\n
Some drivers and staff members who participated in the protest also appealed to the relevant government authorities and regulatory agencies to intervene and protect businesses from what they termed exploitative billing practices.<\/p>\n

The staffers further highlighted that since the coming on board of the incumbent management led by Hon. Uche Obiozor, he has not left any stone unturned in getting the place functioning effectively. However, they tagged the latest electricity bills as a cankerwom that should be vehemently resisted.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, efforts to get an official response from Transpower Electricity Distribution Limited were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Residents and business owners in parts of Imo State have in recent times raised concerns over high electricity tariffs and estimated billing, with many calling for improved power supply and fairer billing methods.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
