The Ideato Progressive Alliance (IPA) has called for an urgent investigation into an alleged unauthorised voter accreditation exercise reportedly conducted in parts of Ideato North Local Government Area, Imo State, raising concerns over the integrity and security of electoral technology ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The group, in a press statement issued on November 4, 2026, and signed by its President, Chief Ferdinand Nwosu, alleged that some individuals, purportedly working with persons associated with the outgoing member representing Ideato Federal Constituency, Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, and others suspected to be Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) personnel, were sighted moving around communities, including Urualla, late at night in connection with the exercise.

According to the alliance, information received from residents indicated that some persons were allegedly invited to present their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), offered ₦5,000 each, had their voter details collected and were subsequently asked to interact with an electronic device believed by eyewitnesses to be the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).

IPA further claimed that four vehicles were involved in the reported operation, adding that it had obtained video recordings which, according to the group, could assist the relevant authorities in establishing what actually transpired.

The alliance described the allegations as serious matters requiring immediate official attention, particularly given the importance of protecting the credibility of the electoral process and public confidence in the deployment of INEC’s technological infrastructure.

It, however, urged the electoral commission and security agencies to establish whether the reported activity took place, identify those involved and determine whether any official authorisation existed for the alleged use of electoral equipment.

Of particular concern to the group is the possibility that the reported collection of voter information and alleged biometric interaction with an electronic device could raise questions about the security and integrity of accreditation data intended for the January 16, 2027 elections.

While presenting these concerns, IPA called for an independent forensic examination of relevant BVAS devices scheduled for deployment in Ideato, should preliminary investigations establish that any such equipment was involved in the alleged incident.

The group specifically appealed to INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Ojo Amupitan, to order a transparent investigation and clarify whether the Commission authorised any voter accreditation-related activity in the affected communities.

It also urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and other relevant security agencies to investigate the allegations, identify the persons connected with the reported operation, trace the vehicles said to have been involved and preserve any available video evidence for examination.

IPA further called for appropriate legal action against anyone found, after investigation, to have violated electoral laws or compromised the integrity of INEC’s equipment and procedures.

The alliance maintained that the concerns should not be dismissed, insisting that early clarification and decisive institutional action would help prevent avoidable controversies as political activities gather momentum ahead of the 2027 elections.

It also appealed to residents of Ideato to remain vigilant, safeguard their PVCs and refrain from participating in any purported accreditation exercise that has not been officially announced or authorised by INEC.

The group stressed that the credibility of the forthcoming election must be protected through transparency, strict adherence to electoral regulations and equal respect for the voting rights of all eligible citizens.

The alliance reiterated that its demand was for a credible electoral process in which the votes of Ideato people would be protected and the outcome determined by the freely expressed will of the electorate.
