Imo Opposition Coalition Raises Alarm Over Redeployment of 27 INEC Electoral Officers, Demands Probe of Alleged $20,000 Bribe\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

The Coalition of Major Opposition Political Parties in Imo State has raised concerns over the reported redeployment of all 27 Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) Electoral Officers in the state, calling for an independent investigation into alleged political interference and other developments ahead of the 2027 general elections.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The coalition made the call on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, during a world press conference in Owerri, where it expressed concerns over the reported replacement of the 27 Electoral Officers, personnel changes in INEC’s Information Technology Department, management of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), operations of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS), and the selection of ad-hoc electoral personnel.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Addressing journalists, the opposition parties acknowledged INEC’s constitutional authority to deploy and redeploy its personnel but questioned the timing and scale of the exercise, particularly in view of allegations suggesting possible partisan considerations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The coalition, however, stressed that the allegations had not been independently verified and should not be treated as established facts, insisting that they warranted transparent investigation to protect public confidence in the electoral process.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It alleged that reports had emerged suggesting possible political influence in the selection and deployment of some electoral officials, including personnel in the Commission’s IT Department. It therefore urged INEC to explain the criteria guiding the recent administrative changes and demonstrate that its decisions were based strictly on professional considerations.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A major concern raised by the coalition was the alleged financial inducement of the newly redeployed Electoral Officers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to the opposition parties, there were allegations that an offer of $20,000 might have been made to each of the 27 Electoral Officers to influence the conduct of the 2027 elections in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Imo State.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The coalition emphasised that it had not independently established the authenticity of the allegation but called on INEC leadership, anti-corruption agencies and law enforcement authorities to investigate and make their findings public.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It maintained that if the allegation proved false, an appropriate clarification should be issued, but if evidence of attempted financial inducement emerged, those involved should face the full weight of the law.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On the deployment of BVAS and electronic transmission of results, the coalition expressed concern over reports of possible operational challenges that could affect the successful uploading of polling unit results to INEC’s Result Viewing Portal (IREV).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It also raised questions about alleged alternative arrangements involving the movement of result sheets to designated centres before uploading, urging INEC Chairman, Professor Joash Amupitan, to clarify whether such arrangements existed and whether they complied with established electoral guidelines.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The opposition parties further called for greater transparency in the management and security of election technology, warning that any compromise in the deployment or operation of BVAS could undermine the credibility of the 2027 elections.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

On PVC management, the coalition said it had received complaints about the alleged disappearance or unavailability of some uncollected voter cards, with some registered voters reportedly encountering difficulties in retrieving their PVCs.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It consequently demanded a comprehensive audit of PVC records in the state to establish the number of cards received, collected and still awaiting collection.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The coalition also expressed concern over reports of possible political influence in the recruitment and deployment of INEC ad-hoc personnel, including presiding officers, collation officers and returning officers.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It urged the Commission to make its recruitment, screening and deployment procedures transparent and ensure that individuals with political affiliations were not allowed to compromise the neutrality of electoral assignments.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The opposition parties also called on INEC to address reports concerning the professional and institutional relationships between certain electoral officials and political or government-linked individuals, insisting that any possible conflict of interest should be examined impartially.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The coalition’s attention was equally drawn to the reported campaign by the Pan-Igbo Youth Assembly calling for the removal of INEC National Commissioner, Mr. Ken Nnamdi Ukeagu.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

While declining to defend or condemn any individual official, the coalition maintained that all concerns about electoral officers should be addressed through established institutional procedures rather than political campaigns or pressure groups.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It urged INEC to remain focused on its constitutional responsibility and avoid distractions arising from competing political interests.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

In its demands, the coalition called on the INEC Chairman to order an independent and comprehensive review of the reported redeployment of the 27 Electoral Officers and publicly explain the administrative reasons behind the exercise.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It also appealed to the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, and other security agencies to remain vigilant against activities capable of undermining electoral peace, public order and democratic participation.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Similarly, anti-corruption agencies were urged to investigate credible evidence of financial inducement, abuse of office or political interference in the administration of elections.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The coalition also appealed to international organisations, election monitoring bodies and democratic institutions to pay close attention to developments surrounding the electoral process in Imo State ahead of the 2027 polls.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

It called on the APC in Imo State to publicly address the concerns and reassure the people that it had no interest in influencing the electoral umpire or securing an undue advantage through the deployment of electoral personnel.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The opposition parties insisted that their intervention was not intended to intimidate electoral officials, blackmail individuals or undermine INEC but to ensure that all legitimate concerns were addressed before the elections.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

They reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful and constitutional engagement, declaring that the people of Imo State deserved an electoral process that was free, fair, credible and transparent.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The statement was jointly endorsed by Chief Macdonald Amadi KSM, Publicity Secretary, African Democratic Party (ADC); Barr. Chuks Agbugba, Publicity Secretary, Labour Party; Amb. Steve Nnadi, Publicity Secretary, Action Peoples Party (APP); Comrade Lancelot Obiaku, State Publicity Secretary, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); Hon. Benneth Obiakor II, State Publicity Secretary, Young Progressives Party (YPP); Comrade Ayozie, State Publicity Secretary, National Democratic Party (NDC); and Hon. Cosmos Unakalamba of the Action Alliance (AA), alongside other participating opposition party publicity secretaries in Imo State.<\/p>\n
