Clubs in the Nigeria Professional Football League are pushing for an abridged league for the 2022\/23 season.<\/p>\n
The clubs cited time constraints and the need to have a uniform calendar with the European leagues as reasons for their proposal.<\/p>\n
It was learnt that the proposal for the abridged league will be forwarded to the Interim Management Committee (IMC) once the body is inaugurated by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).<\/p>\n
The IMC is the new body saddled with the responsibility of running the NPFL after the League Management Committee (LMC) was declared illegal by Nigeria\u2019s sports ministry.<\/p>\n
The league, according to the proposal by the club owners, will be divided into two groups of 10 teams each.<\/p>\n
The top two teams in each group will then compete in a Super Four tournament to decide the league champions.<\/p>\n
Rivers United won the NPFL title last season, fighting off a stiff challenge from Plateau United.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have looked at various options and the best option available to us now is to play abridge league to end the season on time.<\/p>\n
\u201cPlaying full season with the time lost will not help our players who may be going for trials in Europe. Our league need proper restructuring.<\/p>\n
