{"id":40295,"date":"2023-06-01T06:39:42","date_gmt":"2023-06-01T06:39:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/?p=40295"},"modified":"2023-06-01T06:39:42","modified_gmt":"2023-06-01T06:39:42","slug":"nigerians-have-lost-confidence-in-govt-okonjo-iweala","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/?p=40295","title":{"rendered":"Nigerians Have\u00a0\u00a0Lost Confidence In Govt \u2013 Okonjo-Iweala"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">The Director General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has said that Nigerians have lost confidence in government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">Okonjo-Iweala who spoke virtually from Washington, at the inauguration of the Transition Council of the Abia State Governor-Elect Dr. Alex Otti, in Aba, regretted that the political class in the country had dashed the hopes of the electorates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">Delivering a keynote speech at the glamorous event, Okonjo-Iweala, Nigeria\u2019s former Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, said \u201cmany Nigerians no longer believe that their government can do anything for them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">She expressed deep worry over the sad development but noted that it has also triggered the entrepreneurial spirit in many Nigerians.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cNigerians have lost trust in government, you know that. Many Nigerians, especially on our side in the South East, don\u2019t really believe that government can do anything for them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201d On the one hand, maybe it\u2019s a good thing because everybody then becomes their own government. You dig your own borehole to get water, generate your own electricity, do everything for yourself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201d That is entrepreneurial but on the other hand maybe that is not the best way to run things\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">Advocating transparency as the panacea, the WTO boss admonished that for Government to regain its lost confidence among the populace, it \u201cmust get a tight, better and cleaner governance that must be transparent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">She advised the Abia Governor-elect to do things differently so as to regain the confidence of Abians and set the pace for a new order in the country.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">The former Minister of Finance noted that she lived by example while in office, and challenged Otti to inspire hope in the people by doing things right, saying that the expectations on him are much.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">She noted that as Minister, she decided to publish monthly allocations to states in order to counter the lies of some State Governors who were ready to excuse their poor performance on imaginary zero allocation from the federal government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cWe used to publish the finances of every state, what the federal government gave each state every month because I found out governors were telling their people, \u2018oh, we didn\u2019t get any allocation from the federal government this month that\u2019s why we cannot pay salaries, that is why we cannot pay teachers, that is why we cannot run our health system\u2019. And when I visit a state, they will be so hostile.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cWhen I was Minister of Finance in 2003 and started asking, why are people so hostile to the Federal Government, when I would hold meetings or townhalls people would tell us, Federal Government didn\u2019t give us allocations, therefore, salaries have not been paid, teachers are not paid and I found out that they were being told things that were clearly not true.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cThen I went to President Obasanjo and said, can I start publishing what states get each month so their people will know they\u2019re getting this money? He said, yes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cSo we started to publish it in the newspapers every month after the FAAC meeting and then put it on the internet so you can go to the Ministry of Finance website and see.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201d This helped change people\u2019s attitude. Because people could see and say, oh my state got this 60 million or 100 million this month.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">Okonjo-Iweala charged Otti to be transparent and not copy the ways of bad leaders, insisting that he cannot afford to betray the confidence reposed in him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cWe want our state government to set an example by being transparent about its finances.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cThis is a governor that everybody is looking up to. His Excellency is educated, knows how to manage cost because he\u2019s been a bank manager, he\u2019s done so many things.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cSo, can we set an example in Abia for good governance, transparency\u2026 because he has what it takes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">In his speech, he thanked the WTO boss for accepting to honour the invitation, and for her wise counsel.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">Promising not to disappoint her and millions of those who believe in him, Otti declared the dawn of a new era in Abia.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cI have listened to our sister, Ngozi. Every time I speak to her, she says: \u2018congratulations, but I don\u2019t envy you. In fact, I sympathise with you because the expectations are high. You can\u2019t afford to disappoint us because at least let\u2019s have one good thing happening in Abia State.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cThe truth is that there are lots of good things happening for Abia people but not in Abia State. What we never had was great leadership and this is the time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">Otti equally promised to cut the cost of governance which he identified as one of the major pipelines to drain public funds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv0097368966gmail-MsoNoSpacing\">\u201cI believe very strongly that part of the problems for this country is the cost of governance.
