The Imo State 10th House of Assembly has commenced moves to repeal the Imo State Electoral Law No. 5 of 2001 as part of efforts to reform the State\u2019s electoral framework.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

During the House plenary on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the Majority Leader and member representing Owerri West State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, presented the first reading of a Bill seeking to repeal the Imo State Electoral Law No. 5 of 2001 and enact a new law to provide for the conduct of Local Government elections in the State and other related matters.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The move to repeal the existing law, this newspaper gathered, may not be unconnected with efforts to strengthen a comprehensive legal framework to guide the operations of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC).<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

A review of the law is also expected to enhance the conduct of Local Government elections across the State.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The bill has passed its first reading and is expected to undergo further legislative scrutiny in subsequent sittings during its second reading.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
