Insecurity: TPM Kennedy Okere Raises Alarm Over Rising Attacks in Owerri West\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Following the gruesome murder of a motorcyclist, an indigene of Ihiagwa, and the abduction of a female FUTO student, by gunmen, along the Amaeze-Obibiezena road, the Traditional Prime Minister (TPM) of Owerri West, Dr. Kelechukwu Kennedy Okere, has raised alarm over the worsening insecurity in the area.<\/p>\n

According to information gathered, the deceased, identified simply as Emmanuel, was conveying a female passenger, alleged to be a student of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), when he was attacked and killed. The female passenger was subsequently taken to an unknown destination by the gunmen.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Reacting to the incident, TPM Okere condemned the attack, describing it as tragic and deeply disturbing to the already distressed people of Ihiagwa. He prayed that it would be the last of such cold-blooded incidents recorded in the community.<\/p>\n

He further lamented that the Amaeze-Ihiagwa Road and other rural routes across the Owerri Federal Constituency have become death traps and theatres of terror, where farmers, students, traders, and transporters are ambushed daily with impunity.<\/p>\n

Okere called on the state government, whose primary responsibility is the protection of lives and property, to be more proactive in addressing security challenges rather than responding only after incidents have occurred. He noted that local government authorities are not adequately equipped to combat the attackers, but stressed that community vigilantes and trained forest guards could be more effective if properly supported and their welfare adequately addressed.<\/p>\n

To forestall further attacks, he advised the state government to leverage modern security technologies, particularly the use of drones, to comb forests and identify criminal hideouts. He also emphasized the need for urgent rehabilitation of bad roads across communities, noting that poor road conditions often aid criminal activities.<\/p>\n

Community members were also urged to take preventive measures by clearing vegetation along roadsides for several kilometers to improve visibility and reduce the risk of ambush. They were further advised to avoid isolated, dilapidated, and ungoverned roads, especially at dusk. Additionally, residents were encouraged to support and equip local vigilante groups and bush guards to help curb the menace.<\/p>\n

A relative of the abducted student, who identified himself as Ibenyenwa, confirmed the incident. He stated that the victim is a native of Ihiagwa and disclosed that the abducted student is married to his younger brother.<\/p>\n
