It was a gathering of political leaders, captains of industry, traditional rulers and other dignitaries last Saturday at Umualum Umuosinta Amuzi Ikenanzizi in Obowo Local Government Area of Imo State, as the family of the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Security, Sir Longers Anyanwu, held its annual thanksgiving service and reception.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The event, which coincided with the commissioner\u2019s birthday celebration, gradually turned into a political and cultural carnival as prominent personalities across the state gathered to celebrate with the Anyanwu family.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Earlier, Anyanwu held a well-attended thanksgiving service at St. Mary\u2019s Metropolitan Parish, Amuzi, Obowo, a multi-million-naira Catholic church edifice, in which he and his family contributed significantly to its building.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The service, held on Saturday, August 15, coincided with the Catholic Church\u2019s celebration of the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Dr. Michael Okafor, officiated at the service, while Rev. Andrew Agamegwa delivered the sermon.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Preaching from the Gospel according to St. Matthew, Rev. Agamegwa recalled the story of the Canaanite woman whose daughter was tormented by demons and who demonstrated unwavering faith in Jesus Christ.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
He urged Christians to emulate her steadfastness and maintain absolute faith in God, stressing that God\u2019s grace is sufficient for those who believes in Him.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The cleric also admonished Christians to shun division and discrimination, emphasizing the need for unity, love and peaceful coexistence among humanity.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
\u201cBelievers should be firm and steadfast in things of God. They must always live in unity of love and be devoid of division and discrimination as one people redeemed by God\u2019s only begotten Son,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Speaking on behalf of his family, Anyanwu, popularly known as Ebubedike Obowo and Owankutarakpu, thanked God for His grace and blessings upon him and his family despite the challenges of life.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The politician, who was a frontline aspirant for the Imo North Senatorial District seat in the recent All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election, also commended Governor Hope Uzodimma for what he described as visionary and transparent governance.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Anyanwu further described Uzodimma as a patriotic leader whose administration, according to him, had recorded significant achievements in infrastructure, digital skills development, road construction, education, healthcare and other sectors of the state\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
During the reception held at Anyanwu\u2019s ancestral compound, the Chairman of the APC in Imo State, Hon. Austin Onyedebelu, who attended with his wife, commended the commissioner for his sacrifices to the party and his contributions to the development of the state and the nation at large.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Onyedebelu described Anyanwu as a close ally of Governor Uzodimma and a strong supporter of the Shared Prosperity administration, noting that his strategic contributions had helped in repositioning the State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
A major highlight of the reception was the symbolic presentation of hundreds of large yam tubers cultivated in Imo State to traditional rulers in Obowo, alongside bags of rice for their wives, guests and special groups.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The presentation, witnessed by Onyedebelu, Barr. Chris Okewulonu, Chief Marcelinus Nlemigbo (Marcon) and other dignitaries, was made to HRH Eze Dr. Patrick Ngozi Uwalaka, Loghlo 2 of Umuloghlo and Chairman of the Obowo Council of Traditional Rulers and Community Policing, for onward distribution to his members.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Each traditional ruler was expected to receive four tubers of yam and financial support towards the celebration of the Iriji cultural festival in their respective autonomous communities, while their wives were to receive bags of rice.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The gifts were also extended to APC leaders at the state and local government levels, eminent personalities and groups that attended the occasion.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Anyanwu explained that the gesture was intended to encourage Imolites to embrace agriculture, expressing optimism that the state have been sufficiently secured to support large-scale agricultural production for local consumption and export to other parts of the country.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The ceremony later assumed a carnival-like atmosphere as a renowned Igbo highlife band and an Okonko cultural troupe entertained the guests.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
Anyanwu thrilled the gathering with his impressive dancing and drumming skills, displaying his deep-rooted connection to the cultural heritage of his people.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
His energetic performance drew cheers from the crowd and attracted cash gifts, popularly described as \u201cnaira rain,\u201d to the Okonko troupe, the highlife band and even the masters of ceremony.<\/p>\n
<\/p>\n
The celebration ended on a colourful note, combining thanksgiving, political camaraderie, cultural display and a strong message on the importance of agriculture and the preservation of Igbo cultural heritage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
