MEET THE NEW KOMU VICE-CHANCELLOR.<\/p>\n

Prof. Frances Ngozi Chukwukere has been appointed the new substantive Vice-Chancellor of the Kingsley Ozuomba Mbadiwe University(KOMU) Ogboko Ideato.<\/p>\n

Before her appointment which took immediate effect, Prof. Chukwukere was a Professor of Linguistics at the Imo State University, Owerri.<\/p>\n

An accomplished academic and author, Prof. Chukwukere is known for her work in indigenous knowledge, health-related advocacy and language preservation.<\/p>\n

She was one of the specialised academics appointed by the Ohanaeze Ndigbo to help revive and strengthen the Igbo language<\/p>\n

Her appointment as Vice-Chancellor of KOMU marks another significant chapter in a remarkable academic journey which began at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in Linguistics and Igbo in 1986 and later earned her Ph.D. from the same university in 2004.<\/p>\n

She has also undertaken further postgraduate study in Climate Change Economics, Policy and Innovation.<\/p>\n

Professor Chukwukere rose through the ranks of the Nigerian University system and attained the distinguished rank of Professor of Linguistics and Igbo in 2010.<\/p>\n

According to the National Universities Commission, she had, by 2021, successfully supervised 17 Ph.D. students, with another seven doctoral candidates and had served as Head of Department from 2015 to 2020, in 2024, she co-authored \u201cThe National Language Policy and the Demands of Indigenous Language Literacy in Nigeria,\u201d examining indigenous-language literacy, language shift and the implications of national language policy for the preservation and transmission of Nigeria’s indigenous languages.<\/p>\n

In 2015, she participated in an international cultural diplomacy programme and delivered a lecture on \u201cFraming the African Dialectics of Health and Environment: Engaging the Youth in Education and Sustainability.\u201d<\/p>\n

In March 2026, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide selected her as one of four distinguished professors for its Professorial Endowment Chair initiative, established to strengthen scholarship and contribute to efforts to prevent the extinction of the Igbo language. The appointment represented significant recognition of her long-standing scholarship and commitment to Igbo language and culture.<\/p>\n

In an interview, the Acting Head, Department of English and Literary Studies, Dr Chidi Ukagu, described the appointment of Prof Chukwukere who hails from Akokwa, Ideato North, as well deserved adding that she was already on a familiar terrain being the former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Kingsley Ozumba Mbadiwe University, Ogboko, Ideato.<\/p>\n
