INTRODUCTION
\nNneoma, Angel Among Allstars is a euphoric and historic biography of an
\nexceptional woman and kinswoman, mother and grandmother, matron and
\nmatriarch. Simply described as the first among equals (primus inter pares) in all her
\nlife endeavors. Nneoma Veronica Onuabuchi Onwu (Nee Uzor) whom we are
\ncelebrating her life and time was a candle in the wind, who was able to withstand
\nmany life storms and challenges, remains a role model to this and next generations.
\nThe human life is imperfect, made up of pains and gains, merits and demerits,
\nupwards and downwards. But how we handle and manage every situation
\ndetermines the success and progress of our welfare and wellbeing. We celebrate a
\nunique woman with a very high level of patience, perseverance and performance.
\nShe was inherently built with character, strength and principle, who lived a life that
\nwill always be a great source of aspiration, inspiration and motivation for women.
\nAs great women said,
\n\u201cbehind every great woman\u2026is another great woman\u201d (Kate
\nHodges); \u201cher own thoughts and reflections were habitually her best companions\u201d
\n(Jane Austen); \u201cwhat I want young women and girls to know is, you are powerful
\nand your voice matters\u201d (Kamala Harris); \u201cyou have to believe in yourself when no
\none else does\u201d (Serena Williams); \u201clife is about finding yourself, embracing your
\nstrengths and weaknesses, and being true to who you are\u201d (Oprah Winfrey).
\nMost important for women,
\n\u201cit\u2019s not about being perfect, it\u2019s not about where you
\nget yourself in the end, there\u2019s power in allowing yourself to be known and heard,
\nin owning your unique story, in using your authentic voice\u201d (Michelle Obama);
\n\u201cdon\u2019t follow the crowd, let the crowd follow you\u201d (Margaret Thatcher); \u201ca woman
\nwith a voice is by definition a strong woman\u201d (Melinda French Gates); \u201cthe future
\nbelongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams\u201d (Eleanor Roosevelt).
\nFor according to the scriptures, \u201cshe speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction
\nis on her tongue, she watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat
\nthe bread of idleness. Her children arise and call her blessed, her husband also, and
\nhe praises her, many women do noble things, but you surpass them all\u201d (Proverbs
\n31:26-31); \u201cGod is within her, she will not fail, God will help her at break of day\u201d
\n(Psalm 46:5) and finally \u201cfor I am fearful and wonderfully made (Psalm 139:14).<\/p>\n

BACKGROUND
\nNneoma is derived from two Igbo Language words \u201cNne\u201d and \u201cOma\u201d meaning
\n\u201cMother\u201d and \u201cGood\u201d respectively. Nneoma describes a good and kind mother,
\ncaring and loving mother, cautious and virtuous mother; all of which describes our
\ndear great mother Nneoma Veronica Onuabuchi Onwu, an angel among allstars.
\nHer life and time as seen in her education, marriage and career was an epitome of
\nkindness; which has been attested by anyone and everyone that knows her well.
\nHer biography is aimed at documenting the life and time, legacy and philosophy of
\na rare personality that was a pillar of support for her husband, children and
\ngrandchildren, siblings, in-laws and relatives, colleagues, associates and friends.
\nNneoma Veronica Onuabuchi Onwu, who was variously called \u201cMum\u201d, \u201cMummy\u201d
\nMadam Vero\u201d was born on Friday, 07th July 1950 at Isinweke Maternity home, Etiti
\n(now Ihitte \u2013 Uboma LGA), Imo State to Mr. Luke & Mrs. Justina Uzor (both of
\nblessed memory) from Umuntume \u2013 Ofeiyi, Okwuohia \u2013 Obowo LGA, Imo State.
\nHer father worked with the Public Works Department (PWD) of Nigeria, an agency
\nof the colonial government responsible for building and maintaining government
\nbuildings and properties, roads, rails, bridges, harbors and aerodromes, and also
\nwas a renowned Roman Catholic Church Catechist. Her mother was a farmer and a
\ntrader. Nneoma was the second child and second daughter in a family of six \u2013
\nAnthonia, Victoria, Kenneth, Simon and Theresa. They were all brought up under
\nsound ethical, moral and spiritual upbringing of the Roman Catholic Church
\ndoctrines and principles \u2013 a life they all maintained and passed on to their children;
\nstrongly maintained and practiced by them, well preserved for next generations.
\nNneoma and her siblings had a very good family upbringing but was truncated by
\nthe early passage and untimely death of their beloved father. However their lovely
\nmother continued with the struggle for their various training in different fields of
\nhuman endeavors. A very unique attribute she utilized with her husband in raising
\nand training their own children. Not deterred by the death of their father early in
\ntheir life and the burden of their mother to raise them up, with her siblings they
\ncollectively supported their mother towards achieving their individual ambitions
\nand collective objectives of their family. A very unique ethical and moral values,
\nfinancial and general obligations she inculcated in her children and their families.<\/p>\n

EDUCATION
\nNneoma attended St. Bridget\u2019s School, Okwuohia \u2013 Obowo LGA, Imo State, where
\nshe successfully passed and obtained the First School Leaving Certificate (FSCL \u2013
\nStandard VI) on 23rd November 1962. And in her School Testimonial she was
\ndescribed as \u201c\u2026intelligent, hardworking and trustworthy\u201d, by her school \u2013 a
\nwonderful recommendation that paved the way and the foundation for her blissful,
\nfruitful and fulfilled life on earth in all her endeavors. She had also successfully
\npassed and obtained the Christian Doctrine Certificate of the Umuahia Catholic
\nDiocese on 20th July 1962, covering Scripture, Doctrine, Liturgy and Lay Apostolate.
\nNneoma not deterred by the challenges of raising and training her children with
\nher husband, and being a great lover of wisdom and knowledge (a moderate
\nphilosopher), who believes in constantly improving herself and developing her
\nfamily and society; successfully sat and passed the West African Senior School
\nCertificate Examination (WASSCE) organized by The West African Examination
\nCouncil (WAEC) as an external candidate in November\/December 1999
\nexaminations; with excellent result in Economics, Government, English Language,
\nIgbo Language, Mathematics, Agricultural Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
\nShe also attended several trainings, seminars and workshops including the three
\nmonths (1966) Private Branch Exchange (PBX) used for private telephone network
\nwithin an organization or institution at the Electricity Corporation of Nigeria (ECN)
\nin Port Harcourt Undertaking in Rivers State, which became the National Electric
\nPower Authority (NEPA) and later the Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN);
\nand presently unbundled variously as the Distribution Companies (DisCos), the
\nGeneration Companies (GenCos) and the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN).
\nShe also attended a three day (1988) intensive workshop on Basic Nutrition, Health
\nand Catering, conducted by the Nutrition Unit of the Imo State Ministry of Health
\nas well as a two year course (1992 \u2013 1994) at the Women Education Centre of the
\nMinistry of Education, Imo State with proficiency in Clothing Construction, Food &
\nNutrition, Batik, Tie & Die, Cosmetology, Craft, Family Living and English Language.
\nAlso was the two day (1999) Breastfeeding and Lactation Management Course by
\nthe Federal Medical Centre (FMC) Owerri, Imo State and presently renamed the
\nFederal University Teaching Hospital (FUTH) also in Owerri, Imo State, Nigeria.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

MARRIAGE
\nVeronica Onuabuchi Onwu (Nee Uzor) from Umuntume \u2013 Ofeiyi, Okwuohia got
\nmarried to Godfrey Omenuchekwa Onwu from Umuonweremmadu – Umuosinta
\nAmuzi, both in Obowo LGA both of Imo State, Southeast Nigeria. The cultural and
\ntraditional marriage rites were fully performed at Umuntume \u2013 Ofeiyi, Okwuohia;
\nand the religious marriage was solemnized on 8th April 1972 at St. Michael\u2019s
\nCatholic Church Parish, Enugu \u2013 old Anambra State. This was before the creation of
\nnineteen States in Nigeria in 1976. Their marriage was blessed with eight children
\n\u2013 all of whom are meaningfully and successfully engaged in different fields of
\nhuman endeavors in both the public and private sectors of the global economy. She
\nalso had eleven grandchildren, and numerous relatives, friends and well-wishers.
\nNneoma was a loving wife and a caring mother, who together with her husband
\nensured that their children were well trained based on sound family ethical, moral
\nand religious values as well as quality academic, educational and skilful talents to
\nenable their children to make valuable contributions toward the growth and
\ndevelopment of the family and community, society and country. This is evidence in
\nthe outstanding performances of their children in the public and private sectors.
\nShe was very accommodating and tolerant in making sure that there were no
\nconflict of interest among her immediate family and the extended family members.
\nMoreover her husband being the first child in a family of seven and herself the
\nsecond child in a family of six, she definitely and exceptional was a mother to all.
\nShe also effectively and efficiently managed the challenging interests of being a
\ncareer woman \u2013 a loving wife and caring mother. Her utmost priority was that a
\nbetter family is a prerequisite for a better society. She was actually one of the best
\nexamples of a loving wife and caring mother, which she also extended to her kith
\nand kin. She was not just one among equals (unus inter pares) but first among
\nequals (primus inter pares), one of the reasons for her description as \u201cNneoma, the
\nAngel Among Allstars\u201d is a Triple \u2013 A (AAA) for her in family, community and society
\nvalues; and that definitely is the basis, theme and foundation of her biography. She
\nwas indeed a blessing to her generation, the present and future generations to
\ncome. Simply as her life legacies will continue to be an encyclopedia of knowledge
\nand a major subject of continuous research for better and greater family values.<\/p>\n

CAREER
\nNneoma had a very fulfilling and rewarding career as a civil (public) servant
\nspanning over thirty progressive years in both the State and Federal Government
\ninstitutions especially within the agriculture and healthcare establishments. She
\nstarted her career as a Telephone Operator at the Federal Department of
\nAgriculture, Enugu in 1976. Her appointment was brief following the creation of
\nImo State from the then old Anambra State. Subsequently with the transfer of the
\nservices of her husband from the Anambra State Civil Service to the newly created
\nImo State Civil Service her family relocated to Owerri, the Imo State capital in 1976.
\nIn 1978 she joined the Health Management Board of the Imo State Ministry of
\nHealth, Owerri as a Cook at the General Hospital, Owerri which later became the
\nFederal Medical Centre, Owerri but presently the Federal University Teaching
\nHospital, Owerri, Imo State. She occupied various positions of the establishment as
\nfollows: Cook (1978 \u2013 1986), Senior Cook (1986 \u2013 1990), Chief Cook (1990 \u2013 1995),
\nCatering Assistant (1995 \u2013 1999), Senior Catering Assistant (1999 \u2013 2001) and Chief
\nCatering Assistant (2001 \u2013 2010). She retired on the 7th of July 2010 after reaching
\nthe mandatory Nigerian Government civil (public) service retirement age of sixty.
\nShe was an outstanding staff of the Nutrition, Catering and Dietetic Department of
\nthe then Federal Medical Centre, Owerri in Imo State. While in active civil (public)
\nservice, she was the Financial Secretary (1985 \u2013 1993) of the Catering, Medical and
\nHealth Workers Association (CMHWA), Imo State Wing. A position she handled
\nwith confidence, competence and diligence. She also successfully completed her
\ntwelve weeks (13th June \u2013 13th September 1994) industrial attachment (training)
\nat the Edinburgh Hotel, Owerri \u2013 Imo State; after the completion of her two year
\ncourse (1992 \u2013 1994) at the Women Education Centre of the Ministry of Imo State.
\nNneoma Vero Onwu apart from the fact she professionally carried out her duties
\nand responsibilities exceptionally, she maintained an outstanding healthy working
\nenvironment with her superiors, colleagues and associates to the admiration of all,
\nalso thoroughly combined her working career, family affairs and religious activities.
\nShe was a great example of an intelligent career woman, diligent super mother and
\neffulgent practicing catholic. She effectively and efficiently managed the everyday
\nliving requirements and interests of her work, family, church, society and country.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

DEDICATION
\nNneoma Vero Onwu was a devout Christian rooted in the Catholic Church,
\nepitomized by exceptional faith, hope and charity. She dedicated her life to the
\nservice of the Almighty God, humanity and society, based on the principles of
\nsacrifice, patience and perseverance. This was as a result of proper parental ethical,
\nmoral and spiritual upbringing aimed a better and greater family, community and
\nsociety values. This practice has been from generation to generation. Nneoma Vero
\nOnwu\u2019s entire life activities, programs and operations was founded on complete
\nsubmission to the will of the Almighty God. She was a practicing Catholic involved
\nin several religious activities, with the Scriptures and Holy Rosary as her daily
\ncompanion. She was one person who actually practiced what she professed and
\npreached, both in her personal and official life endeavors. Even in the face of life
\nadversity she remained courageous and religious. Generosity was part of her
\neveryday living, as our Lord Jesus Christ and Holy Mother Mary was her role model.
\nShe was a staunch member of the Catholic Women Organization (CWO) of the Holy
\nCross Catholic Church Parish, Aladinma \u2013 Owerri, Imo State. She had been the
\nPublicity Secretary (1992 \u2013 1996) the Zone 2 of the parish Catholic Women
\nOrganization. She was also a member of the Lay Readers Association (LRA) of the
\nHoly Cross Catholic Church Parish and served as the Treasurer (1992 \u2013 1996). She
\nwas also a member of the League of Sacred Heart of Jesus; member of the Guild of
\nSaint Anthony of Padua. Sponsor and promoter of the Block Rosary Crusade; and
\nmember of the Finance Committee of the Holy Cross Catholic Church Parish,
\nAladinma. Her immense contributions cumulated in several awards and
\nrecognitions in appreciation of her dedication: Distinguished Service Award
\n(EZINNE \u2013 1999) by the Catholic Women Organization (CWO) of the Holy Cross
\nCatholic Church Parish, Aladinma; distinguished Service Award (NNEOMA \u2013 2011)
\nby the Catholic Women Organization (CWO) of the Owerri Catholic Archdiocese.
\nNneoma had also made valuable contributions to her home town and home parish,
\nthe Saint Mary\u2019s Catholic Church Parish, Amuzi \u2013 Obowo LGA, Imo State. Similarly
\nin her community service, she had played advisory and counselling roles for
\nchildren, youths and women for a better society. For decades she was the Financial
\nSecretary of the Amuzi Women Association (AWA) Owerri Branch, Imo State.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

CONCLUSION
\nNneoma Vero Onwu was a beautiful and wonderful super mom par excellence not
\nonly to her children and grandchildren, relatives and friends, colleagues and
\nassociates but also to anyone and everyone that comes across her in all her
\nundertakings in both personal and official engagements. A very empathic and
\nsympathetic mother, selfless in solving problems and proffering solutions to issues.
\nNneoma was an effective listener, efficient learner and objective decision maker.
\nShe enjoyed singing and dancing for her everyday life, for which she was a foremost
\nchorister; she liked reading and writing for which she was a renowned church lay
\nreader and writer; excellent in keeping accurate records and writing proper reports;
\nshe was involved in farming and gardening that also formed part of the foundation
\nof her being a professional caterer and nutritionist; at her spare time she also
\nenjoyed sewing and mending clothes; and very humorous at her leisure moments.
\nNneoma Vero Onwu was a beautiful and wonderful person in all aspects of her life
\nand time \u2013 physically and empirically, mentally and intellectually, religiously and
\nspiritually, morally and ethically, emotionally and psychologically, vocationally and
\nprofessionally, financially and economically, socially and politically. She was a
\nblessing to her family and community, society and country. Her generation, present
\nand future generations will honour, respect and celebrate her as a unique mother.
\nAbove all she does not compromise personal hygiene, a very meticulous person,
\nhighly coordinated, thoroughly organized and always ensures very clean
\nenvironments and neat surroundings which she valued and treasured, so much
\nbeing her unique attribute and characteristic. She was simply a great asset of an
\nimmeasurable value and will continue to be missed as she is basically irreplaceable
\n\u2013 super mom, great mom, angel among allstars is a very simple description of her.
\nHer birth on 7th July 1950 was memorable and treasurable, having lived a kind and
\npious life, while her death on 11th March 2026 was impeccable and remarkable,
\nhaving passed away in a calm and mild manner to rest in the bosom of the Lord.
\nAnd as the book of Proverbs 3:15 describes wisdom as priceless, personified as a
\nwoman speaks of the immense benefits of finding wisdom and knowledge, noting
\nthat “She is more precious than rubies; nothing you desire can compare with her”.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
