{"id":51212,"date":"2026-11-02T18:13:44","date_gmt":"2026-11-02T18:13:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/?p=51212"},"modified":"2026-11-02T18:13:44","modified_gmt":"2026-11-02T18:13:44","slug":"imo-lga-election-isiec-confused-unsure-of-next-move-after-cancellation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/?p=51212","title":{"rendered":"Imo LGA Election; ISIEC Confused, Unsure of Next Move After Cancellation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Imo LGA Election; ISIEC Confused, Unsure of Next Move After Cancellation<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/?attachment_id=51213\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-51213\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-51213\" src=\"http:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/IMG-20261101-WA0004.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"810\" height=\"1080\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/IMG-20261101-WA0004.jpg 810w, https:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/IMG-20261101-WA0004-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.imotrumpeta.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/11\/IMG-20261101-WA0004-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 810px) 100vw, 810px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC) is at crossroads at the moment following the unsure date for the conduct of the Local Government Area elections.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>After two dates for election, ISIEC last weekend indefinitely postponed the forthcoming Local Government Council elections.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The elections were earlier scheduled to hold on Saturday, November 7, 2026 after it was shifted from September 27.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The announcement was made on Saturday, October 31, by the ISIEC Chairman, Chief Charles Ejiogu, during a stakeholders&#8217; meeting at Rockview Hotels, Owerri.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The meeting brought together representatives of political parties, the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), traditional rulers, security agencies, journalists, faith-based organisations, women and youth groups.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reports available to Trumpeta states that Ejiogu recalled that the electoral process commenced following the Commission&#8217;s notification of September 18, 2025, in line with relevant constitutional and statutory provisions.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The elections were initially fixed for September 26, 2026, but were later shifted to November 7 following consultations with stakeholders and concerns raised by some political parties, including legal actions seeking an extension.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, after further consultations, the Commission resolved to suspend the November 7 exercise indefinitely&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ejiogu assured political parties and other stakeholders of ISIEC&#8217;s neutrality, stressing that the Commission remained an independent electoral body committed to providing a level playing field for all contestants.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He described IPAC as a strategic partner in the electoral process and urged political parties to maintain constructive engagement with the Commission.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The ISIEC chairman also called on political actors to reject violence, thuggery, hate speech and the destruction of opponents&#8217; campaign materials, emphasising the need for peaceful political participation.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On election security, he disclosed that the Commission was working with relevant security agencies to establish an Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES), involving the Police, Armed Forces, DSS and NSCDC.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He further assured that a fresh election date, timetable and updated guidelines would be announced within the shortest possible time.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The postponed elections are expected to cover 4,758 polling units across 305 wards in the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development, Imo State IPAC Chairman, Comrade Uche Isiodu, welcomed the postponement, describing it as an opportunity for political parties and other stakeholders to prepare adequately for a more credible electoral exercise.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He, however, urged ISIEC to release a new timetable promptly to enable political parties and their candidates to plan effectively.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Similarly, the Imo State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Comrade Ifeanyi Nwanguma, underscored the importance of local government elections in strengthening grassroots democracy and promoting development.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>He challenged the Commission to discharge its responsibilities effectively by conducting free, fair and credible elections.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The state Labour Party Chairman, Dr. Nelson Ezerioha, and APC State Secretary, Hon. Onyekachi Ibezim, also welcomed the decision and expressed confidence in ISIEC&#8217;s capacity to organise credible polls.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The situation has put ISIEC in a quagmire about the date for the conduct of the election considering that the year has barely eleven weeks to end and the general election for Presidential\/National Assembly and other elections occupy greater part of the first quarter of next year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Imo LGA Election;
