Action Alliance (AA), Imo State has said the state is fast sliding into autocracy.
State chairman of the party, Comrade Ifeanyi Okponwa-Eze in a statement, Wednesday, submitted that the attack on pensioners protesting non payment of their pensions is about the worst one could see in a democracy.
Okponwa-Eze described as most worrisome the narrative that the pensioners had a clash among themselves even when a video clip showed miscreants flogging the retirees.
The chairman stated that what a government with high regard for democracy should have done is to vehemently condemn such show of shame and attack on fundamental human right.
He noted that democracy provides for peaceful protest, adding that there is no justification for such disrespect, dehumanization and physical assault.
The party recalled that it had earlier urged the Hope Uzodimma administration to pay salaries and pensions and stop tormenting Imo people.
Action Alliance maintained that salaries and pensions are not privilege but right, insisting that the governor has no excuse for treating the retirees with disdain.
