It was a gathering of who is who last weekend at Government Secondary School, Owerri as the Old Boys Association of the school held their 2026 annual reunion/homecoming.

 

The event which was well attended by the members of the association from all the sets of the school who have excelled in their various fields of endeavour and profesions was climaxed with election of a new set of executive to pilot the affairs of the association for a tenure with the emergence of Arc Chidi Clinton Okoli as the National President.

In an interview with newsmen shortly after his inauguration, Arc Okoli disclosed that the school which was established over 90 years ago has been a model secondary School that has produced many successful entrepreneurs in the country.

He revealed that a whole lot of very  responsible leaders, politicians and people who have made it in all fields of endeavour and are placed on top positions in life attended Government Secondary School, Owerri, stressing that the institution is among top model schools in the whole federation.

Arc Okoli emphasized that the outgoing executive did their best, “We give them kudos. We will step up from where they stopped. We will do better and take this school to a higher level.

Apart from taking the Association to the next level, we’ll make it more visible. We’ll be bold and innovative in action” He said

 

“The Schiol was conceived by our forebears about 90 years ago and was primarily aimed at moulding future leaders in character, learning and service, noting that the school has reasonably fulfilled that goal with the caliber of most of her products making waves in different fields of endeavour all over the globe, ranging from the academic field where school has produced world rated academics such as Professors Robinson Egwuatu, an entomologist, Sam Onyiriuka, Okwudiba Nnoli, a great Political Scientist, Prof Cornelius Ezekwe, Prof Phyl Amadi, in medicine and Pharmacy we have Prof Frank Akpuaka, a world renowned surgeon, Prof C D Ike, Prof Onwubere, former Provost of the College of Medicine, UNTH; Prof Katchy, a renowned Orthopedic surgeon , Prof SNC Anyanwu, a renowned oncologist/ Breast cancer surgeon, the corporate world where personalities like Pharmacist Bruno Nwankwo,a foremost Pharmacist, the present Obi of Onitsha, Igwe Alfred Achebe, a first class traditional ruler, rose to the position of Executive Director in Shell Petroleum, Felix Ohiwerei former Chief Executive of Nigerian Breweries/ Guiness, Dr Chimezie Nwizu, Sir Jonas Odocha, former Group General Manager, NNPC/ NLG, Chief Golden Njoku; Late Engr Benson Achareke of then Golden Guinea Breweries, Engr Nwilene, foremost Civil Engineer, Nze Joe Ibe, a foremost Geologist/foremost General Manager NNPC, Dr Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa, a guru in the Pharmaceutical industry and former President of both Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria and the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, Engr Charles Okoro, former Director in Shell, Engr Charles Ngoka, former DMD of Totalenergies, Surveyor Victor Okoronkwo. In public administration, the school has nurtured and produced personalities like Pa Nath Okoro, pioneer indigenous MD of Nigerian Railway Corporation, Chief Executives of Banks such as Nebolisa Arah of Fidelity Bank, Philip Oduoza of UBA, Ken Oji of then Diamond Bank, Chief Dr Richard Ofuru, Dr Megwa, Nkem Ononiwu, Dr Goddy Edoziem, Engr Bede Obioha,and many others too numerous to mention. In private sector, we have ebullient and successful entrepreneurs like Oba Ezugo Nwandu, Engr Geoff Onuoha, Sir Morgan Wereuche Amadi, Dr Innocent Ezuma ( Zumex), Chika Ikenga, Dr Maranzu,Engr Eddie Okoroji, Barr Charles Asugha,Dr Joseph Nnorom, Dr Etofolam Osuji,Chief Kingsley Osuoha, Nze Chijioke Tasie, Chief Pascal Onugha and a whole lot of great and accomplished old Boys in sports, academics and business, etc creating waves in Africa, Europe and America. We are proud of them”, he pointed out.

 

The National President noted that the students of the school are doing excellently well in academics, stressing that in both internal and external examinations, they have been performing wonderfully well while in sports, they have  been excellent, being the best cricket team in the country presently.

He revealed that Government Secondary School, Owerri Old Boys Association is an amalgamation of the old and young generations, adding that the association has done a lot in terms of infrastructural upgrade, donation of computers and laptops, donation of books, mentoring,etc, etc . He specifically identified some of the projects to include, a beautiful hall built and donated by Ezugo Nwandu of the 1962 set, the school entrance gate built and donated by 1974 class set, regrassing and fencing of the cricket pitch executed by the 1975 set, the Assembly hall/ belfry renovated by the 1973B class set, renovation of the old Principal’s office block by the 1972 class set, the ICT block donated by Totalenergies through an old boy, Engr Charles Ngoka, the laboratory block renovated and equipped by MTN foundation amongst other numerous giant strides either executed directly by different class sets or through some form of intervention or the other.

 

According to Arc Okoli, “If not for the old boys, most of the structures in the school would have completely collapsed if not for their intervention. They have done much and we are poised to do more but regretted that these facilities are not being maintained by government. ‘ We lack maintenance culture’, he further cried out. We’re ready to partner with the government to address the teething problems confronting the school, topmost amongst them are security within the school , lack of teachers in core subject areas and over population amongst others. He promised that the new administration will bring about the much desired transformation the school desires.

 

The Reunion event of Old Boys Association Government Secondary School Owerri is annual event which takes place every first weekend in March Friday to Sunday with these major events: the President’s Night on Friday, the Annual General Meeting , the Dinner/ Awards Night on Saturday and the Reunion Thanksgiving service on Sunday.
