Chief Charles Orie (Akuatuegwu): Beyond Zoning, a Journey Defined by Action
As the saying goes, “Actions speak louder than words.” This aptly describes the personality of Chief Charles Orie, popularly known as Akuatuegwu.
For those who may not have known him over the years, Akuatuegwu has consistently demonstrated a goal-oriented mindset. He is someone who works diligently to achieve whatever cause he believes in without necessarily making a lot of noise about his efforts. His approach has always been to let his actions speak for themselves.
His recent visit to the Nigerian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom in London, where he reportedly canvassed support for the good governance agenda of His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, and sought the support of Nigerians in the diaspora for the President’s anticipated re-election bid in 2027, has once again drawn attention to his political engagements beyond Nigeria’s shores.
Similarly, the support he has reportedly received, both at home and abroad, for his own ambition to become the next Governor of Imo State, including an endorsement by Ambassador Aminu Dalhatu, has added another dimension to the conversation surrounding his political aspirations.
These developments raise an important question: For those who still doubt his seriousness about the Imo Project 2027, is it not time to take a closer look at the steps he has been taking?
For those who remain unconvinced about his intentions, perhaps it is time to reassess their assumptions. As the Igbo saying goes, “Ana anaghị agba onye ntị n’ahịa esula,” reminding us of the importance of paying attention to what is happening around us rather than remaining oblivious to unfolding developments.
When Akuatuegwu began this journey approximately two years ago, many opinions were expressed about his intentions. Some argued that he was not genuinely interested in contesting the governorship. Others suggested that he should pursue a Senate seat, while some speculated that he intended to use his governorship ambition as a bargaining tool to negotiate for a seat in the Federal House of Representatives.
Such speculations prompted a fundamental question: Did these individuals truly understand the person of Akuatuegwu?
The Igbo proverb, “Onye amaghi mmanụ ji akpọ ya enyịa,” captures the idea that people may fail to appreciate what they do not understand.
One thing his supporters maintain is that Akuatuegwu does not need to pursue governorship merely to negotiate for another political position. Those familiar with his political relationships and longstanding connections argue that he has cultivated an extensive network of relationships across the globe. He is also regarded by his associates as someone who understands the importance of public relations and maintaining meaningful relationships without constantly drawing attention to himself.
Over the years, Akuatuegwu has reportedly played a role in supporting successive administrations in Imo State. Even when some observers expected his relationship with the present administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma to deteriorate following his resignation from the government, he continued to express support for the administration.
This position reflects a principle he is known to express: that it would be unwise to destroy a house one had helped to build. In that spirit, he has maintained that he will continue to support Governor Uzodimma for as long as he believes the governor is performing well.
Another factor that supporters believe distinguishes Akuatuegwu’s governorship ambition is the emphasis he places on goodwill accumulated over time. From this perspective, his political aspiration is not defined solely by zoning arrangements but also by his relationships, political experience, public engagement, and the support he hopes to build across different communities.
For Akuatuegwu and those who share his vision, the Imo Project 2027 is therefore presented as an ambition that goes beyond zoning.
Whether this vision will ultimately gain broader acceptance remains a matter for the people of Imo State to consider as political discussions develop. For now, his activities and engagements continue to generate conversations about his intentions and the direction of his political journey.
Ultimately, time, public engagement, and the democratic process will provide a clearer picture of how this ambition unfolds.
Akuatuegwu’s message, as presented by his supporters, is simple: actions matter, relationships count, and political ambitions must ultimately be tested by the people.
