It was pathetic and solemn on the part of members of the joint committee on Aviation of the National Assembly, stakeholders in the aviation sector and the audience who watched former gubernatorial candidate in Imo and a frontline politician, Chief Barr Ike Ibe who broke down in tears after making his submission during the public hearing on Dana Airline crash that killed 153 two weeks ago.
Barr Ike Ibe could not hold back tears that surrounded his eyes moments after he ended his speech during the public hearing that was incidentally chaired by Senator Hope Uzodimma, representing Orlu zone in the National Assembly.
According to Ibe who took time to blame the crash on unbridled corruption in the system, corruption the greatest albatross of successive administration and it has destroyed Nigeria.
Speaking further, in an emotion laden voice, Ike Ibe who lost the wife, Nancy Echendu Ibe (nee Okwulehie) daughter (Jessica Ibe) and an in-law Mrs Maria Okwulehie stated “for every disaster or incident in Nigeria, the same templates have been adopted being investigation, recommendations, white paper etc. There is never implementation until the white paper turns brown or another disaster happens, and the template is dusted up and the circle continues.
In Nigeria, Operators are regulators and regulators are operators. Government officials are contracted and contractors are government officials…. It is very clear that Nigerian system and structure has broken down”.
