A tinge of drama for the umpteenth time erupted in the Imo State House of Assembly as the perennial power outage frustrating operations of the members reared up its ugly head yesterday and again marred the screening exercise of commissioners’ nominees.
Despite the clearance given to all the nominees to proceed to the governor for inauguration and allocation of portfolios, Trumpeta correspondent observing proceedings related to the screening in the House can confirm that power outage again affected the exercise.
This newspaper in its Thursday edition (yesterday) reported how constant power outage outing, poor public power supply and malfunctioning generating sets frustrated the exercise, leading to a fresh date for the final confirmation.
The commissioners’ nominees were first screened by the ad-hoc committee on Monday and asked to appear on Wednesday for confirmation during plenary. After repeated time of reporting elapsed, they were asked to go home and return on Thursday due to power blackout.
On Thursday, while the Speaker Acho Ihim presided the plenary on the floor of the House, and was reading the committee’s report, power outage struck and the House thrown back into darkness.
The lawmakers quickly rose up from the chamber and adjourned again. Trumpeta learnt that the commissioners’ nominees who were yet to be ushered in for screening were however invited into the office of the Speaker for confirmation. In the midst of darkness and scorching heat, the nominees earned clearance.
When contacted for comments, the media aide to the Speaker confirmed the epileptic power supply disturbing the lawmakers stating that it has been a perennial issue Ihim has been tackling. He assured that very soon, the matter will be resolved.
