PDP Crisis; Party in Imo Under Nwachukwu Backs Wike, Anyanwu
By Chioma Nkama
The troubles bedeviling People’s Democratic Party at the national stage are also taking its toll at the state levels as a fraction of the party in Imo State, believed to be loyal to one of the factions has extended support to the faction led my Wike.
Trumpeta recalls that turmoil has already engulfed the PDP with a faction under Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike and that led by two state governors; Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohamed of Oyo and Bauchi states respectively.
Only last week, commotion erupted at the Wafata House, party headquarters in Abuja with both factions laying claim to the office which culminated to a free for-all-brawl before police operatives took over to maintain peace.
Suspected to be allies of the warring factions, the party told newsmen in Owerri of its position which lends support to the Wike group which also has Senator Samuel Anyanwu, also from Imo State.
The political atmosphere within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) took another dramatic stage as the Imo State chapter openly under Hon Austin Nwachukwu dismissed the recent convention held in Ibadan, describing it as nothing more than a political jamboree staged by what it called a “lawless Committee of Friends.”
This strong reaction came after a well-attended Stakeholders’ Meeting in Owerri on Saturday, November 22, 2025, where prominent leaders and members of the PDP in Imo State gathered to review the state of affairs within the party.
At the heart of the meeting was the controversial gathering in Ibadan on November 16, an event the stakeholders insisted was illegal, reckless, and contemptuous.
According to a press Statement of November 24th ,2025 signed by Lancelot Obiaku the Imo state Party Publicity Secretary available to Trumpeta, it states that the convention had “no basis in law” and amounted to a tea-party attempt by desperate individuals trying to overreach the authentic leadership structure of the PDP.
In a surprising but significant twist, the Imo PDP heaped praises on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for refusing to recognise or participate in what they described as an invalid and unauthorized assembly. The party said INEC’s boycott further validated their stance on legitimacy, discipline, and respect for democratic institutions.
But beyond condemning the Ibadan gathering, the Imo Stakeholders used the meeting to reaffirm their loyalty to key national figures within the PDP. They unanimously threw their weight behind the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Barr. Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, acknowledging him as the National Leader of the party a position they said he had earned through years of commitment and sacrifice.
The Press Statement recalled how Wike, since 2015, contributed immensely to rebuilding the PDP, helping the party rise from controlling only four states to winning 16 governorship seats. For the stakeholders, such dedication cannot be ignored.
The group also affirmed confidence in Hon. Abdulrahman Mohammed, who they insist remains the Acting National Chairman; Distinguished Senator Samuel Nnaemeka Anyanwu, who they praised as the rightful National Secretary; and Rt. Hon. Austine Nwachukwu, whom they described as the undisputed Chairman of the Imo State chapter.
In the same vein, the stakeholders endorsed Senator Mao Ohuabunwa as the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, insisting that the leadership of the PDP at all levels must be guided by constitutional order and internal democracy.
The tone of the meeting was one of firmness and unity. Speaker after speaker echoed the need for discipline to return to the party, stressing that only respect for due process and the Rule of Law can keep the PDP strong, cohesive, and credible.
The stakeholders concluded their lengthy deliberations with declarations of pride in Senator Anyanwu and commendations for Wike’s “exceptional performance” as FCT Minister. They vowed to continue supporting actions that strengthen, rather than weaken, the party.
As the session came to a close, the hall resonated with chants affirming loyalty to the PDP, Imo State, and Nigeria at large .Which is a symbolic reminder that, despite internal tensions, the Imo PDP is standing its ground on the side of legitimacy, unity, and constitutional authority.
