By Innocent Osuoha.

But by the grace of God, an Anglican Priest of Diocese of Ogbaru, Rev Tochukwu Agina, would have been in the morgue by now following the way Naval Officers at a Naval checkpoint in Okpotouno, Ogbaru LGA of Anambra State brutalized him.

According to Rev Agina, after he was revived hours later, ” it was on 30th of November, 2025, at about 5pm, our vehicle was on the queue at the checkpoint as the Officers attended to the vehicles collecting tolls and while we waited I decided to go through my WhatsApp”.

” As we approached them, they asked what I was doing with my phone and I replied that I was going through my WhatsApp”.

He said the officer thought he was making a call and ordered him to come down to which he equally obeyed and demanded to see the senior Officer.

The Reverend gentleman, spotting his clerical attire, said as he was discussing with the Officer, another emerged from nowhere and sought for permission to handle him to which the senior Officer obliged.

The Clergyman said he was descended upon with hitting on the head, kicking at the scrotum, legs and other parts of the body.

He revealed, ” I lost consciousness and hours later I found myself in a Naval clinic there bleeding and hours later, I was treated and discharged”.

Following this development, the Bishop of Diocese of Ogbaru, His Lordship, Rt Rev Prosper Amah, has petitioned the Chief of Naval Staff, Nigerian Navy HQ, Abuja, demanding a thorough , transparent and independent investigation into the incident.

The petition captioned “UNLAWFUL BRUTALISATION OF AN INNOCENT PRIEST BY A NAVAL OFFICER AT A CHECKPOINT” and dated 01/12/25 which condemned the Naval Officers attitude also sought for identification and appropriate disciplinary action against the erring Officers, adequate compensation to the Clergyman as well as other prayers.
