The political structure at the grassroots level in Imo State is heading for a major transition as the tenure of the present Local Government Council chairmen and councilors draw near following the latest amendment of the Local Government Law

 

Imo State House of Assembly on Wednesday, September 23, 2026 amended the Local Government Law, enabling the governor to appoint interim management committee that will see the running of the Councils for a period of six months or more depending when next a proper council election is conducted.

 

With the existing tenure of the incumbent chairmen and councilors drawing curtains on September 30th, 2026, fresh appointments are underway unless suggested otherwise by the governor or the State electoral umpire.

 

It could be recalled that the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission, ISIEC, had prior before now fixed Saturday, September 26, 2026, for elections into the 27 chairmanship positions and 305 councillorship seats across the State. The exercise as then announced by ISIEC is expected to take place in 4,758 polling units.

 

The situation has also taken a legislative dimension following moves by the Imo State House of Assembly concerning the legal framework governing local government administration.

 

The House, whose constitutional role includes making laws for the peace, order and good governance of the State, has set the dice rolling with the latest amendment.

 

This has triggered heightened interest among interested persons concerned and political parties, particularly over its implications for the administration of the councils during the transition period.

 

Against this backdrop, there is growing speculation that Governor Uzodimma could make fresh appointments to constitute Interim Management Committees, IMCs, if such an arrangement becomes necessary under the amended legal framework.

 

However, any specific list of proposed appointees or definite date for such appointments remains subject to official confirmation.

 

The development has already generated intense political uncertainty across the councils, with parties, aspirants and grassroots actors positioning themselves to brace up to whatever that may come any moment from now.

 

For incumbent council officials, the development signals the closing phase of their current tenure, while for prospective political office holders, it represents the beginning of another cycle of grassroots leadership.

 

Trumpeta Newspaper learnt that coming days are therefore expected to be consultations, and underground work.

 

Leader of the House, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi while leading the debate, clarified that the amendment hinged on section 16 (a) for tenure expiration and further action which prohibits vacuum in the administration of the Local Government system.

 

Also, he said that from the amendment, each electoral ward is expected to produce one member in the IMC arrangement for proper balance in the system.
