The five villages in Owerri Nchi Ise, Owerri municipal, will Saturday, 28th July, 2012, celebrate the annual Oru – Owere festival.
The festival is proceeded with the usual yam roasting to signify commencement of the festival.
Imo Trumpeta learnt that this year’s event will be marked with the usual mass procession by various age grades across the five villages that constitute Owerri community.
Reports available to this newspaper indicates that the procession starts by 8 am and is expected to end by mid noon where all the Age – grades will to converge at the Ugwu – Ekwueme civic centre, situated along Egbu road, Owerri. The ceremony is expected to attract the crème d la’ crème in the municipality including the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha who is expected to be the special guest of honour at the event.
The Oru – Owere festival signifies the celebration of life, love and oneness amongst the people of Owere nchi ise.
Speaking to newsmen on the event, the President General of Owerri Community Assembly (OCA) Chief Sir Christian Oweaya Anukam explained the benefits of the ceremony Owerri people. He said the Oru festival is a thing of joy, peace and togetherness.
He gave a brief breakdown of the history of the festival, which dates back many years ago.
Oweaya added that this year’s event will be unique, as Owerri indigenes from far and near will grace the event.
Speaking on the event, the Executive Chairman, Owerri Municipal Council, Sir Emma Odor congratulated the people of Owere Nchi Ise on the festival.
He said the Oru festival symbolizes peace, urging the people to use the event to celebrate love and harmony.
