By Onyekachi Eze
History was made during the Tuesday, April 14, 2026 plenary session of the Imo State House of Assembly as the member representing Owerri West State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, was named “Leader” of the 10th House.
The elevation of Onyemaechi to the position of “Leader” of the 10th House, Third Assembly of the State Legislature, was formally announced by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Chike Olemgbe.
The Speaker described the adjustment as a strategic step aimed at strengthening legislative coordination and enhancing effective governance within the House.
Onyemaechi’s elevation from Majority Leader to “Leader” of the House followed the recent defection of two opposition lawmakers into the majority fold.
Recall that a few months ago, the former Minority Leader and member representing Aboh Mbaise State Constituency, Hon. Princewill Amuchie, defected from the PDP to the ruling APC.
Similarly, the Deputy Minority Leader and member representing Owerri Municipal, Hon. Clinton Amadi, also left the Labour Party to join the APC.
Prior to their defection, the APC already held 25 out of the 27 seats in the State Assembly, with Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi serving as Majority Leader.
In the absence of any opposition, the Speaker announced that Onyemaechi would henceforth serve as the “Leader” of the House.
Hon. Onyemaechi, also known as Egbe-eji-eje-ogu, was described as a unifier and a capable legislator whose contributions to the smooth running of legislative activities cannot be overlooked.
Observers have it that Onyemaechi has remained consistent in the discharge of his legislative duties since his election as the member representing Owerri West.
Meanwhile, the announcement has been met with excitement among Owerri West constituents and political stakeholders across the Owerri federal constituency.
They congratulated him and described him as a “jinx breaker” and a trailblazer.
“This is a well-deserved recognition. He has broken barriers and continues to deliver for his people and the entire Imo State. Egbe-eji-eje-ogu is a true definition of what a Leader of the House should be,” a constituent remarked.
Trumpeta Assembly Correspondent reports that Onyemaechi, upon his election in 2019 as the representative of Owerri West, emerged as Majority Leader.
Following his re-election in 2023, he retained the position; an achievement unprecedented in the history of the Owerri West State Constituency.
History also has it that it is the first time Imo State House of Assembly has a leader of the House.
Reaffirming his commitment, Onyemaechi pledged continued dedication to the service of the State and his constituents. He also reiterated the Assembly’s support for Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration th
rough prayers and legislative action.
