The annual cultural event of the people of Mbaise to mark their annual new yam festival otherwise called Iriji Mbaise took a political shape yesterday when several groups turned it to a political carnival.
Our reporter who monitored events at the Aboh Mbaise venue of the ceremony reported that the cultural show witnessed several interests that transcended cultural events.
While the event was on, youths spotting wears of a prominent political office holder stormed the place. The youths chanting solidarity songs almost disrupted proceedings as the events went on.
Several activities took place even as the Governor and his Deputy were absent.
Speaking to our reporter, the Sole Administrator of Aboh Mbaise, Tony Atudume decried the acts of the youths who invaded the place singing the praises of one of the politicians as uncalled for irresponsible.
Atudume however requested Mbaise people to partner with Rochas Okorocha government to realize their dream of having Imo Governor of Mbaise extraction.
The Aboh Mbaise SOLAD wondered why PDP should be undertaking a political campaign at a cultural event.
“I hope PDP is not afraid of public rally. Why should they use Iriji Mbaise to Campaign” he added.
Among those who graced the occasion was the Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Rt Hon Emeka Ihedioha, whose arrival at the cultural festival witnessed a tumultuous applause from the mammoth crowd. Ihedioha is a son of Mbaise clan.
