Uneasy calm now pervades the peaceful serenity of the state premier Institution, Imo State University following allegations and counter allegations that the state Government has perfected plans to foist a substantive Vice Chancellor to the school.
This is coming on the heels of advertisement for the six year vacant position of a substantive vice Chancellor for the institution.
According to the university set guideline, the position of vice chancellorship of universities has remained an exclusive position for scholars with the degree of Doctor of philosophy otherwise known as Ph.D.
However, investigations revealed that during the recently advertised vacant position of the vice chancellor of the Institution, the school authorities carefully in a deliberate manner omitted this all important criteria/qualification and condition for candidates to the position.
The development which is generating tension within the university community has been viewed as a calculated attempt by the state government to foist the Acting Vice Chancellor, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie who allegedly is not a Ph.D holder on the school as its substantive Vice Chancellor.
A group of lecturers under the aegis of “concerned IMSU Lecturers” are said to have petitioned to all relevant academic authorities including the Imo State Governor and the Senate of the school over that deliberate omission of the qualification for the vice chancellorship position.
Saying that, “it would amount to changing the goal post at the middle of a football match”. They therefore appealed to both the Governing Council and Senate of the Institution to ensure that the laid down process of employing a substantive Vice Chancellor for such an Institution is religiously followed to the letter.
