The humanitarian and advocacy group, United Nigeria for a Better Nation, has visited the Imo Correctional Centre as part of its ongoing campaign for justice reform and the promotion of human rights.

During the visit, the group expressed serious concern after observing that 1,262 detainees are currently awaiting trial, describing the situation as worrisome and capable of undermining the principles of justice, fair hearing and rule of law.

Speaking to journalists, the State Coordinator of the group, Hon. Chief Njoku Samaco, decried the high number of detainees, particularly those being held over civil-related matters. He explained that the purpose of the visit was to encourage the inmates and demonstrate love and solidarity.

He further assured that the group would sustain its visitations and engage relevant stakeholders to ensure cases involving civil matters are reviewed and addressed.

Hon. Njoku also pledged to liaise with the Correctional Centre Commandant to explore ways of improving healthcare support for the detainees, following observations that many of them require medical assistance.

The State Woman Leader, Lolo Evelyn Igwilo, called on government agencies, the judiciary and civil society organisations to collaborate in ensuring speedy dispensation of justice and the decongestion of correctional facilities across Imo State. She also offered prayers for the emergence of leaders who would be compassionate and attentive to the cries of the innocent.

The leadership of the group reaffirmed its commitment to sustained advocacy for a more humane, responsive and effective justice system in Nigeria.

It was also observed that many of the detainees are actively engaged in educational programmes and vocational training, and as such, prefer to be referred to as students rather than inmates.

Other members of United Nigeria for a Better Nation supported the views of their leaders and encouraged members of the public to resolve disputes amicably without unnecessary third-party interference.

In their remarks, the General Provost of the Correctional Centre, Anyim Chukwuemeka, and General Pastor, Ugochukwu Iwueke, expressed gratitude to the group for the visit, prayers and gifts presented to the centre.
