By Onyekachi Eze
The Imo State 10th House of Assembly has commenced moves to repeal the Imo State Electoral Law No. 5 of 2001 as part of efforts to reform the State’s electoral framework.
During the House plenary on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, the Majority Leader and member representing Owerri West State Constituency, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, presented the first reading of a Bill seeking to repeal the Imo State Electoral Law No. 5 of 2001 and enact a new law to provide for the conduct of Local Government elections in the State and other related matters.
The move to repeal the existing law, this newspaper gathered, may not be unconnected with efforts to strengthen a comprehensive legal framework to guide the operations of the Imo State Independent Electoral Commission (ISIEC).
A review of the law is also expected to enhance the conduct of Local Government elections across the State.
The bill has passed its first reading and is expected to undergo further legislative scrutiny in subsequent sittings during its second reading.
