Imo Govt Confused Over LGA Leadership
…House of Assembly Members in Marathon Meeting Over Next Step for Council Officials
Confusion has gripped Imo State Government over the conditions of local government areas in the state with regards to issue of leadership of the councils.
Trumpeta can reveal that at the moment, the administration of Governor Hope Uzodimma is at crossroads over the method to have the councils get new leadership.
It would be recalled that a year ago, the Imo State Government disclosed that the tenure of Council officials elected in 2024 would elapse in September 2026. Subsequently, the Imo State Independent Electoral Committee, ISIEC issued a one year notice ahead as a directive for election into the councils this year.
Few months ago, the government announced that elections would be held on the 25th September this year to end the tenure of the Chairmen and Councilors, and user in new elected members.
When it became manifest that the election won’t hold, the state suspended the proposed election while the Imo State House of Assembly went on through the act of parliament to amend the Local Government law by giving legal backing to the governor appointing Interim Management Committee (IMC) for the council leadership.
While the tenure of the LGA officials ended on 30th September, 2026 nothing has been heard from the state government signalling confusion in the entire polity.
Trumpeta learnt that at the moment, the state government has neither nominated members for the IMC nor made any comment concerning the amended version of the LGA law by the lawmakers.
This newspaper has it on good authority that both the state government and lawmakers are at lost on what to do concerning the state of affairs.
It was learnt that the lawmakers are reportedly meeting beyond hours to find a solution to the the present predicament. Authoritative sources revealed that there are issues related to a caveat concerning appointment of IMC where it was learnt that the Federal Government may withdraw release of LGA allocation to state running IMC system.
This problem of non funding of LGAs under IMC system is the greatest bane of the government in Imo State as uncertainty over funding remains a problem.
The Imo State House of Assembly and lawmakers are meeting to chart a new course which Trumpeta are yet to know on the way forward.
