Imo Sports Council Celebrates Medal winning Athletes
..As Heartland Flickers, Others Present their Laurels
With the intentions of encouraging his athletes, the Principal Officer in charge of the Imo State Sports Council, Rtd Cpt Christain U Ibekwe on Thursday September 4 celebrated over 100 athletes of different sports who have won medals and trophies at various competitions locally and internationally.
The event which took place at the VIP stand of the main bowl of Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri saw the PO hosting the athletes and the coaches/secretaries and association chairmen to a feast in appreciation them for job well done.Addressing the gathering, Cpt Ibekwe attributed the achievement of the athletes as mark of a total shift from the old to a new down describing them as worthy ambassadors of the state while advising the coaches and the athletes not to relent on their ores but double their efforts to ensure that the tempo is maintained.
He however promised that hence forth every success of the council athletes will be jointly celebrated promising that at the appropriate time, His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha whom he said has imagination will appreciate the athletes for all these laurels and more that will come from future competitions especially the sports festival in Calabar, Cross River later in the year.transformed the state beyond imagination will appreciate the athletes for all these laurels and more that will come from future competitions especially the sports festival in Calabar, Cross River later in the year.
The sports which Imo athletes won laurels ranging from Bronze, Silver and Gold includes Karate, Cycling, Handball, Tennis, Judo, Dark (Draft), Athletics, Taekwondo, Kickboxing, Wrestling, Gulf, Hockey (Goodluck E Jonathan, National Hockey Super League) and Powerlifting were Lovelyn Ogbuji won Gold at the Common Wealth Games in Scotland).Reacting, Hon Godswill Megwa (Vice-President, Nigerian Hockey Association), while commending the PO for his encouragement to the athletes described him as a true professional especially on how he has managed the limited resources available to carry everyone along but appealed to the State government to try and fulfill its promise by upgrading the sporting facilities in the state to the current slandered especially the hockey astro turf which according to him will not only attract international games but help to improve the economy of the state.
Also speaking, coach Fabian Emeagha and Miss Justina O who both spoke on behalf of the coaches and athletes respectively thanked the PO for his fatherly role describing him as a motivator while thanking the management and staff of the council for the unflinching support and prayer promising that the sky will be their starting point especially for the festival games in Calabar.
Some of the dignitaries present at the event were, Eng Chuks Anele (Chairman Imo Cycling Association), Dr Mrs Patience Anyanwu (member Hockey Association), Eng Emeka Ohaegbu (Capt Arsenal Country Gulf Club, Obinze), Mrs Patricia Ezeji (PRO Sports Council) and the entire management staff of the council.

It is expected that the event will be heavily attended as the Lord has prepared a tabernacle for all lovers of Solo Mourinho’s hot sports, Triple A sports and Weekend sports round up from Monday to Saturday that no one will tremble nor fumble at the alter on reception.
