Cases of extortion and allegations related to bribery and corruption are reigning in Imo State School system as the State government has been accused of incriminating silence.

Trumpeta investigations revealed that due to negligence on the part of Ministry incharge of secondary education in the State, heads of some schools are allegedly involved in certain underhand practices that rip off parents and their wards.

In one of the schools, our reporter visited in Owerri Municipality; Government College, Owerri, this newspaper learnt that shoddy deals are allegedly going on which have attracted the attention of the parents and the students leading to outcry.

Details obtained have it that for instead of the official fee of  N4,000 stipulated for registration of Junior WAEC for this year, it was learnt that not less than N18,000 is to be paid by each of the candidate said to be about 800 in number should the information be true, Trumpeta gathered the management of the said school would be raking not less than N14,400,000 within this period.

For the Senior Secondary School section, those in SS3 were also said to have paid the sum of 59,000 instead of the initial fee of 37,800 for WAEC and NECO examinations billed for this year.

Going by the figures, Trumpeta learnt that millions have been racked in running into several millions by management of Government owned secondary schools in Imo State.

Trumpeta learnt that this is the practice in several secondary schools across the State.

It was further learnt that alarmed by the high amount charged, Parents of students of Govt College, Owerri have attracted the attention of the management led by principal to give highlight on what transpired with regards to money paid by the students for the examinations.

An information from the Ministry of Education, Owerri, concerning registration for Junior WAEC dated 10th January 2023, stipulated registration at for 4,000 only per candidate.

For the senior WAEC, total fee of WAEC notifications of November 2, 2022 stipulates 37, 800 per student for registration.

Efforts to reach the principal proved abortive as our reporter who was at the school premises for verification was unable to speak to her.

A similar move to the Ministry of Education office was futile as no official was willing to speak on the matter.
