FIFA announced on Wednesday that Morocco, Spain, and Portugal will host the 2030 World Cup, while Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay will host the tournament’s centennial opening matches.
The World Cup, which debuted in Uruguay in 1930, will commemorate its centennial during the competition. Spain would be the new location for the competition. Portugal and Morocco would host the remaining games after the opening matches in South America. The World Cup will be held in six nations and three continents for the first time.
The FIFA Council unanimously decided that Morocco, Portugal, and Spain’s joint bid, which will host the event in 2030 and automatically qualify from the current slot allocation, will be the only candidate.
In addition, the FIFA Council unanimously decided to hold a special centenary celebration ceremony in the nation’s capital, Montevideo, after taking into account the historical context of the inaugural FIFA World Cup as well as three World Cup matches in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay, respectively.
