Community Government Under Attack In Imo
As Imo Youth Assembly Calls For Return Of Town Unions

The controversial Community Government Council (CGC) in Imo State has received another bashing, as Imo Youth Assembly (IYA) yesterday vowed to resist any attempt by the present Administration to use CGC as a political tool to achieve its selfish aims and intentions. The Association also described the CGC as a dramatic way of politicizing the Autonomous Communities and coercion of the grassroots to support Governor Okorocha’s candidature or those he selects for elected positions in the coming political dispensation.

In a statement by the Council and signed by Dr. Harold Wilson Onumo (National President), Comrade Precious Nwadike (National Secretary) and Comrade Franklyn Edede (National Publicity Secretary), they alleged that the reason why Okorocha introduced the CGC which is in defiance of the constitution, was to destroy the LGA system and hold onto power in the state.

It solicited for the return of town Union associations which it described as a symbol of democracy, republicanism and popular decision making and an identity of the Igboman that has stood the test of times and predating the advent of the colonial masters.

The group called on well meaning sons and daughters of Igboland, especially the civil society and community based organizations to challenge what it described as an act of neo-imperialism will place the grassroots at the mercy of an emperor.

Part of the resolution of the group reads “that any attempt to desecrate the Town Union’s effectiveness automatically destroys the spirit of self help, effective development, freedom of expression, social mobilization, political emancipation, efficient information dissemination and independent choice of candidate by the common people thus rendering them politically and socially incapacitated”. It also pointed out “that the Town Unions in Imo State, as in the other six Igbo State, as in the other six Igbo speaking states in Nigeria, are separate institutions together with their individual distinct constitutions, bank accounts etc in accordance with their peculiarities, preferences, as captured and recognized by law No. 6 of 2006, which law subsists till today” The Council maintained that the Town Union is advising Governor Okorocha to let Town Unions be.
