For 2013 Sports Award
The Sports Writers Association of Nigeria Imo State Chapter has partnered with an event management firm WELLS NETWORK LTD (WNL), for this year’s award ceremony tagged SWAN Sports Legend and Merit Awards.
Addressing the Press yesterday at the SWAN Office inside Dan Anyiam Stadium, the SWAN chairman Mr John Nwogu of the famous IBC sports crew said the event will aim to recognize , honour and be grateful to the sponsors and unsung heroes of sports at the Community, LGA’s and State levels.
He further noted that it will help to encourage and gladden the heart of sports philanthropists, administrators and corporate bodies who have contributed immensely on sports development.
In his own speech the MD WELLS NETWORK, Sir Goodluck Nwachukwu enumerated other reasons behind the event that will mark the crescendo of SWAN one week activities stating that it will help in the upliftment of sports and sporting activities in our communities, LGA’s and the State at large. It will also encourage our sports men and women who have performed creditably to do more and; also the young ones as well as raise fund for the renovation and furnishing of SWAN secretariat.
Goodluck continued by saying that the event will also have other side attractions as qualified and cleared nominees shall be published on sports journals and newspapers before the event and shall be given beautiful/crystal plaques and certificates.
He however stated that His Excellency, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, the executive governor of Imo State will be decorated as the Grand Patron of SWAN and the special guest of honor with the former State Governor Chief Achike Udenwa (Onwa), as the chairman of the occasion while Kanu Nwankwo and Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu will be guest of honors with other guests as Hon Uche Onyeaguocha, Chief Sam Daddy Anyanwu and Prince Lemmy Akakim (Okpata Ozuoha).
In a release signed jointly by the SWAN chairman and the chief consultant, nominations of qualified persons and corporate bodies for the award of “SWAN SPORTS LEGEND & MERIT AWARDS” respectively was declared open and the closing date for nomination put on the 28 of October, 2013 while a novelty match amongst the physically challenged persons will take place on November 29 and the event proper on November 30.

Oriental War To Decide Heartlands Faith
With two games remaining to end the 2012/13 Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL), dethroned cup champions, Heartland football club will on Wednesday attempt to ensure their place in next seasons league by winning their last home game of the season.

NSCDC Wins Comptroller General of Customs
National Volley Ball Competition

At the just concluded comptroller general of customs National Volley Ball Competition held in Kaduna amongst all state volleyball clubs, paramilitary and military volleyball teams in the country, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defiance Corps team emerged winners of men and women categories.
The final of the tournament which was held at the Murtala Square Kaduna had in attendance, the Comptroller General of Customer, Alh Aihassan, President and members of various sports federations and members of various state Volleyball Association, was watched by a capacity crowd.
While handing over the trophy to the winners, Engr Abu Gumel commended all the participants for exhibiting the Spirit of Sportsmanship throughout the one week tournament and encouraged all to up their games to enable the compete favorably at the international level.
Receiving the female Trophy the Captain of NSCDC who happens to be the Nation Volleyball team captain, Chinyere Onuoha from Imo state command of the NSCDC thanked the organizers of the competition especially, the Comptroller General of Customs who donated the trophy.
I thank God and my team mates, our coaches and fans for their participation and the team spirit. Our gratitude goes to the Commandant General for his support in Sports which has led to our success. “I will continue to make NSCDC and Nigeria proud in Volleyball” she concluded.
