Dame Emily Obiyo Memorial Unity Cup Kicks-Off
Finally the much talked about Dame Emily Ahunna Obiyo Memorial Football Competition for the Nine Local Government Areas in Owerri zone was officially kicked-off on Saturday March 15 at the Old Township Stadium along Tetlow road with lots of excitement and in colorful manner.
The championship which is the brain child of Samuel-Mary & Dame Emily Ahunna Obiyo Foundation jointly organized by Chief Dr Uzoma Obiyo, Multi-net System Limited, Airtel Network Limited, Samanny Infotech Limited, MTN Nigeria Communications Limited and Systems Limited saw all the Nine participating teams dressed in a colorful jersey’s as they took their turn in memorial match past organized in honor of Late Dame Emily Obiyo.
In his brief address to the competing teams and the spectators at the event, Chief Uzoma stated that the tournament is held in honor of an inspiring role model, a woman of charity and care and a great Amezon Late Dame Emily Ahunna Obiyo, our treasured mother of blessed memory.
He described her as a woman who loved and lived in love; stating that she aws indeed an icon of inestimable value, who achieved much on earth.
On a final note Dr Obiyo used the opportunity to officially declare the tournament open wishing everyone exciting days of interesting and beneficial competition.
Meanwhile, the executive assistant to Chief Obiyo, Hon Dan Chikere thanked the co-organizers YSFON for putting up a such a wonderful and interesting show adding that they are other programs lined up alongside the football competition as Tennis Competition will also be held among players from the 9 LGA’s and a quiz competition for Secondary Schools in the area to encourage the promotion of quality education.
He also said that plans have already been concluded by the foundation to organize free eye-clinic service at designated centers in the 9 LGA’s in line with the promotion of a healthy life for the less privileged.
The event later saw the crowd entertained with friendly game between Municipal and Ikeduru LGA which ended 0 0 as the competition games proper will start today at Chioma Ajunwa Stadium, Ahiazu were Owerri West will be taking on Ezinihitte-Mbaise in a group C tie.

Nigeria began their campaign at the 2014 Fifa U17 Women’s World Cup with a 2-1 victory over China PR at the Estadio Alejandro Morera Soto in Alajuela.
