In fact, the State Police Command has been living up to its billings in the area of crime detection, prevention and other duties.
There is no gain saying the fact that the foundation for crime detection and prevention laid by Police Commissioner Musa Katsina in 2013, till his exit to Oyo State early 2014, is currently being built upon by the present Commissioner of Police, Mr Austin Evbakhavbokun.
Last Wednesday, officers of the State Police Command arrested a suspected notorious human trafficker, Chief Emmanuel Eke of Mbutu in Isiala Ngwa South, Abia State.
According to the Imo Commissioner of Police, Mr Austin Evbakhabokun, the arrest of Chief Eke was sequel to a report that one Miss Ibuchi Okafor from Ihioma, Orlu who absconded from her home with pregnancy returned home without her pregnancy or baby.
Mr Evbakhavbokun who was represented by the Command’s image maker, CSP Andrew Enwerem, a DSP at a press briefing in Owerri, disclosed that upon interrogation, Miss Ibuchi confessed that she was delivered of a baby boy at the home of Chief Emmanuel Eke who in turn allegedly sold the baby to a yet to be disclosed buyer at the sum of five hundred thousand naira.
Mr Enwerem said when the state operatives stormed the home of Chief Eke, other pregnant ladies believed to be “baby producing machines” for sale were equally arrested.
He gave the names of the “human machines” as Miss Nkasiobi Uchenna, 23 years, of Nkwuegw Umuahia, Abia State, 24 year old Miss Ela David from Isoko in Delta state. Miss Blessing Nwabeke who is deaf and dumb without an identity and 25 year old Miss Oluchi Victor from Isiala Ngwa in Abia state who contracts ladies with pregnancy for Chief Emmanuel Eke.
In an interview with Trumpeta Chief Eke confessed to the offence and affirmed that he sold the baby of Ibuchi, five hundred thousand naira, but would not disclose the buyer.
Twenty year old Ibuchi Okafor did not deny the story and even added that she was paid fifty thousand naira out of the deal.
Mr Enwerem disclosed that the police is investigating the matter adding that the suspects would soon be charged to court for trafficking children.
He restated the resolve of the command to battle crimes in its ramification in the state but however advised parents to always be wary of the conduct their children.
