Uneasy clam and tension is pervading headquarters of the Imo State Police Command, Owerri, as a section of the rank and file is protesting the recent release stating those entitled to go for promotion courses at the various police colleges across the country.
A recent police document, popularly referred to “signal” reportedly short-listed lists of names scheduled to undergo promotion course for year 2013 at the Police College, Ikeja. The attached names are second batch of sergeants, corporals and constables for the scheduled promotion course.
Trumpeta however learnt that the released list is brewing discontent in the state command as those whose names were omitted are raising eye brows over the composition of that failed to include a reasonable number of qualified policemen due for the promotion course.
It was gathered that contrary to expectations of some constables who were enlisted into the force in for verification 2007 and due for the promotion course for Corporal after five years of service, their names were omitted.
Our reporter who was at the command headquarters observed some police constables lamenting the omission of their names stating that it is an unhealthy development that would stagnate their growth and career in the force. Of about 400 police constables serving in Imo command who were recruited in 2007, only few were opportune to be listed for the promotion course to corporal rank.
Most of them who thronged the command headquarters yesterday to see the list wore forlorn looks to express their displeasure over the omission of their names as their juniors according to force enlistment may have been considered before them.
Following the noticed alleged discrepancies, a booklet register was opened in one of the offices in Owerri where those who were not captured in the signal were requested to put down their names for a review.
When contacted, Police Public Relations Officer, Joy Ekomeko denied knowledge of the development adding that any protester should include his/her name.
