Heartland Flickers Set To Regain Lost Glory
Former African Club Hockey Champions, Heartland Flickers, Owerri has set their mind on regaining their statute by picking one of the two Female continental tickets when the International Energy Insurance (IEI), Hockey National League kicks-off in Port Harcourt September 15 to 21.
Dealter Queens and Flickers did qualify for the IEI Hockey Super League at the end of the 2013 National League’s Atlantic Conference play-off which took place at the astro-turf hockey pitch of the Otumba Dipo Dina Stadium at Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State.
The participating teams in the female category were Imo Heartland Flickers, Delter Queens, Rivers and host Ogun while in the Male category Delta Force and Rivers were the only teams it through in the absence of as they went other team.
Other teams that also made it to the Port Harcourt tourney are Bayelsa Queens, Edo, Yobe, Police of Ondo, Plateau and Benue State.
Flickers team head coach Jude Nze (Arab), expressed optimism over his team’s chance of performing very well at the championship noting that after their disappointing outing last time at the continental championship, they are left with no choice but to ensure they finish first or second in Port Harcourt in other to win one of the tickets in the Female category.
In a special chart with Trumpeta sports desk, Arab said his players have been receiving tremendous support from the Imo Sports Council ably led by Ag Director of Sports Mrs Chizotam Aretola praying God that with all things being equal the team is due to leave Owerri for Port Harcourt this Sunday.
The Super League competition is billed to take place at the Adokie Amesiemaka Stadium’s Hockey pitch in Port Harcourt from 15 through 21 September.
Winners and runners-up at the Super League will qualify for the African Club Male and Female Championships which is being proposed for Accra in Ghana later in the year

back Fedponek Rectors Cup Champions

History was made on Monday September 9 at the 21st edition of the Federal Polytechnic Nekede Rectors Football Competition otherwise known as the ‘Rectors Cup’ marking the first time it is played in a well-constructed Mini-Stadium by the Chief Executive of the Institution Dr Mrs C Njoku.
The competition which kicked-off on August 30 came to its crescendo with fun fair as it also marked the end of the Schools Student Week activities with almost the entire population of the Institution parked inside the newly and well-constructed Mini-Stadium that could easily pass for home grounds of some professional football clubs.
The arrival of the Rector Dr Mrs Njoku, heralded a thunderous applause from the Staff and Students who obviously were paying gratitude to her tireless efforts in revitalizing the image of the Institution as well as up-grading the facilities and Structures inside the Citadel of learning.
Dr Mrs Njoku in a lighter mood gave the students and the entire crowed a bit of her dancing skills when she took to the stage dancing to the admiration of her students tribute song on her achievements and the greatness of FEDPONEK.
In the final game of the championship which was between two engineering Departments, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering, it was dragged to a penalty shoot-out which the Mechanical Students won 5 4 to retain the trophy they won last year.
Earlier on, Computer Science defeated Mass Communication 1 0 to cart away the bronze medal while in the Female category, School of Humanity/Engineering also beat the ladies from Industrial and Applied Science 1 0 to win the Female version of the “Rectors Cup ’13”.
Meanwhile, individual awards were also given out as Agbai Destiny (Computer Science) with 5 goals won the highest goal scorer’s prize, Computer Science were however adjudged as the most disciplined team (Fair Play), Nwaiwu Oscer (Comp Sc) and Uzoma Donald (Mech Eng) were both awarded best Defenders and Goalkeepers while Maduforo Kingsley (Mass Comm) won the Most Valuable Player (MVP) of the tournament.
