As Nigeriais in a desperate search for an Olympic Gold Medal winner in boxing, Governor Rochas Okorocha was said to have engaged himself in a boxing bout at the 80th birthday ceremony of former Vice-President, Dr Alex Ekwueme.
Newspaper reports revealed that the Imo state Governor allegedly punched a protocol officer attached to Anambra state Governor, Mr. Peter Obi who refused to allow him sit on a chair said to have been reserved for the governor of Anambra. The incident, according to the reports, occurred 20 minutes before most of the invited guests arrived for the event.
Trouble was said to have started when the Imo state Governor, Owelle Okorocha removed the name tag bearing Obi’s name from the seat. This attracted the ire of one Mr. Felix Aluoma, who pushed Governor Okorocha when he was removing the tag. Okorocha’s Aide de camp, Gabriel Onu was said to have pounced on Alumona, hitting and tearing his uniform, while other security details attached to the Imo Governor joined the scuffle.
According to reports, observing that the matter was on the verge of escalating beyond proportion, Governor Okorocha was reported to have said there was no basis for a fight over an ordinary seat.
When Governor Obi eventually arrived, he was said to have squeezed himself in the couch, sitting between Anambra state Deputy Governor, Mr. Sunday Onyebuchi and Governor Okorocha.
In his response to the development, Imo state Information and Strategy Commissioner, Chinedu Offor, denied reports that Owelle Okorocha was involved in a boxing fight with Obi’s protocol officer.
