A Chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Ngor Okpala LGA, Chief Val Okere has urged the communities in Imo State, to reject the N1m counterpart funding from the State Government, describing it as a Greek gift.
Reacting to the inauguration of the Community Government Councils CGC in Imo State, Chief Okere (Amadioha Ngor Okpala) said the exercise smacks of indirect rule, which Ndigbo rejected at the advent of the colonial rule in Nigeria.
“CGC is pure and simple indirect rule which the Southeastern Nigeria rejected during the colonial era. But Governor Okorocha is trying to re-introduce the model in Imo State through the back door” he said.
Chief Okere maintained that rather than foster development and unity in communities, the Okorocha model will tear the communities apart, since the exercise was undemocratic, with Government foisting strangers on the communities which will breed disagreement and squabbles.
Amadioha Ngor Okpala berated the exercise which produced “wrong people” as leaders in the communities, adding that democracy has been existing in Imo communities through transparent elections which gave birth to President-Generals, stressing that with imposition of strange characters as leaders by the Okorocha administration, the culture of transparent democracy in the communities is at the verge of disappearance, and may affect the psyche of Imo people towards other elections.
“The Government deceived the grassroot by telling them that there would be an election. Poor villagers bought forms and were disappointed as strange fellows were sent by Government to Communities. Till date none of the aspirants have been refunded their money” he said.
