Even as the veracity or otherwise of the widely reported story of a gang – rape case alleged to have taken place at the Abia State University, ABSU Uturu, has not been fully ascertained, another indecent sex act has been recorded in Imo state. This time, six young men said to be students of theImoStateUniversity, Owerri have been apprehended for allegedly having unlawful canal knowledge of a female student, aged 21 from the Federal Polytechnic Nekede near Owerri, (names withheld) at a students hostel in Orji, Owerri North. While the suspects including their female accomplice are cooling their heads in police net, intelligence unit officials from the state police command have commenced investigation as the victim is in a critical condition in one of the hospitals in the state. It was learnt that a female colleague of Nekede had requested that she should accompany her to visit a boyfriend in Owerri town. Oblivious of the bestial plot by the boyfriend and his cohorts, the unsuspecting young woman moved from their Fedpoly Nekede to one of the student’s hostel scattered at Orji. On reaching the house of the boyfriend, she met a different scenario. As the friend of the victim who she came with to Orji stepped out for an errand, the male friend and other boys around grabbed the defenseless girl, stripped her clothes off before undertaking countless sex bouts. Despite pleas by the victim to be pitied and spared claiming that she was engaged, the randy fellows continued to pound her private part turn – by – turn until she reportedly collapsed and was unable to withstand the illicit act. The victim who managed to gather breathe after they spared her was rushed to a private hospital (names witheld) in Owerri where she received medical attention. The adverse effect of the combined strength of the rapists however worsened before she reported to the police and rushed to another hospital. Imo Trumpeta learnt that intelligence unit of the State Police command swung into action immediately and their efforts yielded results as some of the suspects including the female colleague who took the victim to the boyfriend’s residence at Orji are in police net. It was however gathered that police intervention disrupted further plans by the suspected rapists to unleash mayhem on the victim and her fiancé who were being threatened on phone if they don’t come to them for “settlement”. When contacted on phone for confirmation, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Vitalis Onugu, said he has not been briefed on the matter. According to him “I am not aware what you are telling me, it could happen, but I have not been briefed on that issue. I will check around and get back to you”.
