Traffic Congestion in Owerri: Government to shut all motor parks .Set to introduce 600 buses

As part of measures to curb the menace of traffic congestion in Owerri Metropolis, the government of Owelle Rocha Okrocha says soon, it will close all motor parks inOwerriMunicipality.

This measure was disclosed by Special Adviser on Transport to the Governor, Chief Raymond Duru.  He said the traffic congestion is ravaging the Municipality and this compelled the state Government to take such proactive measure.

Duru stated that in a bid to find a lasting solution to the traffic menace in the Municipality, the government will close all the motor parks operating inside the Streets of Owerri which from all indications has constituted serious traffic congestions in the Municipal.

He however stated that four major parks will be established at four major exit points of the Municipal Area namely, Naze, Akwakuma junction, Orji/Akabo and Somachi park along Egbu road were motorists will drop their passengers”, Duru said.

Chief Duru also revealed that plans have already been concluded for a successful take off of the Owerri Municipal Taxi and Bus Transport Services.

TheUSAtrained Automobile Technician and Automotive Service Management Engineer disclosed that the transport system in the Municipality is faulty and that he and his team have taken time to identify the problems which is gradually being taken care of.

He went further to say that because the past administration did set the transport system compensate some of their political associates, he advised that the system be revived by withdrawing all the taxis and buses because for a transport system to function effectively the means must be in good shape.

“We have completed the work of putting all the vehicles in good shape and have also ordered some luxurious and mini-buses to complement the renovated ones for the take off of the Municipal Mass Transport Company Services which will have it’s headquarters at the mechanic village, Naze.

“We have arranged for the introduction of 600 taxis into the system and as I speak with you the Keke transport system will be re-organized to be more effective and efficient”.

Duru stated that his office has designed a programme to make graduates work as bus attendants stating that the system will create 2, 000 jobs for the state and that efforts are being fine turned to make it a cashless fair system that can also attract revenue to the state.
