Ex-Super Eagle’s International, Benedict Akwaegbu and Chelsea midfielder Mikel Obi were among award winners for Community service in Jos, Plateau State last weekend.
Mikel, Akwaegbu and Russia based Obinna Nsofor were honoured for their services to Community as well as being role models to the youth.
The award ceremony which was staged at the Crest Hotel in Jos, were these players were born attracted top government functionaries including the Governor of Imo State Rochas Anayo Okorcha and that of Anambra State, Peter Obi who on their part were recognized with various awards.
“The Igbo nation is grateful to these stars who have made invaluable contributions not only to their chosen careers but also to their immediate community. They are true role models for the youth to emulate,” read part of the citation.
Reacting to the award Akwaegbu on behalf of the recipients who were absent had this to say,
“On behalf of the other award winners, I wish to state that we are encouraged to touch more lives in our various little ways,” he said.
It would be recalled that Akwagbu has represented Nigeria at U – 17, U – 20, U – 23 and full international levels and featured at the 2002 world cup.
The Mbaise born star, who is now based in London, has supported various youth teams across the country and currently has a non-League outfit, Mbaise Lions, who reached the final of this year’s Imo State FA cup final.
Mikel and Nsofor have been among the most consistent performers for the country as well as for their top European clubs.
