ONUIMO LAWMAKER, JAMES ESILE JOINS BARR CHIOMA UZODIMMA ON CAMPAIGN AGAINST FEMALE GENITAL MUTILATION
..PARTNERS GOODHOPE WOMEN’S FLOURISH INITIATIVE TO END FGM IN ONUIMO LGA, IMO

The campaign against Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, in Imo State has received great boost with the collaborative efforts of the Member representing Onuimo State Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, Hon Chief James Uba Esile.

Considered as unhealthy practice, the Lawmaker has partnered the Goodhope Women’s Flourish Initiative of the wife of the Imo State governor, Barr. Mrs. Chioma Uzodimma in seeking for the eradication of FGM.

Lending his support to the movement under the Fresh Air movement he presides as the pioneer president, Hon. James Esile took the campaign to his Onuimo constituency.

He described female genital mutilation as not just a harmful practice, but also inhumane that has destroyed countless lives, dignity and dreams of so many girls and women.

He said, “FGM has long been described as evil, barbaric, unacceptable, and anti-culture, and rightfully so. No woman, young or old deserves cutting. The practice violates not only her body but also her identity, her future, and the divine blueprint by which she was wonderfully created. Her Excellency’s initiative is not only in Imo but Nigeria and global. As Her Excellency, Lady Barr. Chioma Uzodimma firmly explains, FGM stands against the will of God, against modern civilization, and against every moral and legal principle of human rights. It shatters lives, leaves physical scars, creates emotional trauma, and brings long-term mental suffering that many victims carry to the grave”.

It further reads:
A Campaign Rooted in Awareness, Education, and Total Community Participation:

Her Excellency, Dr. Barr Chioma Uzodimma, through the Good Hope Women’s Flourish Initiative, has consistently shed light on the deep dangers of FGM and its medical complications, psychological trauma, and its cruel violation of womanhood. She emphasizes that the fight against FGM is not a battle for women alone but a responsibility for all members of society. This includes:

-Religious leaders, who must preach the truth that God never instructed the mutilation of girls.
-Cultural leaders and custodians of tradition, who must acknowledge that culture grows, evolves, and rejects harmful customs.
-Parents and guardians, who must protect their daughters from practices that destroy their future.
-Teachers and schools, to raise a generation that understands the value of bodily integrity and gender dignity.
-Youth and community groups, who must amplify the message and shun the silence that fuels this evil.

More details suggest that Hon. James Uba Esile has thrown full weight behind this movement, by mobilizing Onuimo communities, speaking to leaders, and calling for the total abrogation of the practice.

Also, his involvement brings strong legislative backing, grassroots influence, and renewed energy to the fight through the following;

-Recognizing the damage and ensuring it never happens again.
-The wounds caused by FGM go beyond physical injury as many victims suffer the listed effects below;

-LIFE-LONG TRAUMATIC MEMORIES
-Emotional withdrawal
-Difficulty in childbirth
-Loss of self-esteem
-Marital complications
-Chronic pain and infections.

The practice it exposed has robbed society of healthy mothers, confident daughters, and emotionally stable women. It has cost communities productivity, wellbeing, and peace of mind. As Hon James Uba Esile often emphasizes, “We cannot continue to watch this damage multiply from generation to generation.”

In commending the Goodhope Women’s Flourish Initiative, Esile extolled its founder, the first lady of Imo State, Barr Chioma Uzodimma, for the tireless work, courage, and commitment to ending FGM in Imo State.

He added that their partnership with community groups, NGOs, government agencies, and traditional institutions has created one of the strongest anti-FGM movements in Nigeria today.

“Their work is bringing hope to victims, empowering women, enlightening communities, and forging a new future where girls grow without fear of being forcefully “cut.”

THE CALL TO ACTION; THE TIME IS NOW:

Ending FGM requires everyone. It requires open conversations in families, bold declarations by leaders, and a collective willingness to abandon harmful traditions. With leaders like Hon. Chief James Uba Esile and the supportive influence of Her Excellency, Dr. Barr. Chioma Uzodimma, Imo State stands at the frontline of this liberation struggle.
The message is clear:
No more silence.
No more excuses.
No more cutting.
Let every girl grow whole, healthy, and free.
The elimination of Female Genital Mutilation is not tomorrow’s task, it is NOW.
