In a bid to ensure the safety of educational Facilities in schools located in the rural areas, the Imo State School-Based Management Committee (SBMC) was officially Inaugurated .

The inauguration ceremony which took place at Ego Oduka Hall, at the Imo State Universal Basic Education Board arena , Port Harcourt Road, Owerri , drew key stakeholders from the education sector from all 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State.

Presenting his welcome address, the IMSUBEB Chairman Hon. Chidiebere Egboh, described the introduction of SBMC as not only a necessity but a dependable partner in accelerating community ownership of basic education facilities.

Hon. Egboh recalled that on assumption of office, he met the challenge of community members encroaching on basic education facilities. He noted that the swift intervention of SBMC structures in managing affairs at various schools has made such encroachment a history.

Hon. Egboh reaffirmed IMSUBEB’s commitment to partner with the SBMC to actualize its mandate and ensure no child is left behind in acquiring basic education.

Inaugurating the Imo State SBMC, the National Chairman of SBMC, Alhaji Abdullahi Umar (Wazirin Gwandu) of Kebbi State, charged members to intensify grassroots engagement in basic education management of school facilities by enforcing standards, and manpower development in their localities.

In his words “The work you have to do in basic education facilities across your communities has just begun,” he stated.

In his inaugural speech , Dr. Ukachukwu H. Erisim, Imo State Chairman of SBMC emphasized on the need for SBMC members, guests, stakeholders, and education-focused NGOs to form an alliance to secure the future of the younger generation. He commended SBMC leadership across the 27 LGAs for taking ownership and actively providing support, guidance, and manpower development that has helped revitalize basic education in Imo State.

In his goodwill message, the National Ex-Officio of SBMC, Dr. Kabiru Aliyu congratulated the newly inaugurated committee for their commitment to the cause of basic education. He stressed that more work is to be done to ensure every child, irrespective of background, gender, or religious affiliation, acquires basic education, describing education as a verifiable tool to fight poverty, ignorance, and social vices.

An Awardee at the event, Imo State NDDC state representative Dr. Kyrian Uchegbu, who was honoured for his outstanding support to basic education in Oguta LGA, made substantial donations to fund SBMC activities in rural communities.

Meanwhile , The SBMC inauguration also attracted the presence of key stakeholders including Education Secretaries, Traditional Rulers, Presidents-General of Communities, LGA SBMC Chairmen, Women and Youth Leaders, corporate organizations, and NGOs committed to advancing basic education.

The inauguration of the SBMC is expected to make engagement in basic education facilities across rural communities more proficient and provide the catalyst for a coordinated effective management by the various stakeholders piloting basic formal education in their various localities.
