…As Okara Vows to Improve
Lives with Football
Sunday February 2, 2014 was indeed a day of joy and happiness for the Youths and citizens of New Owerri during the opening ceremony of the maiden edition of the New-Owerri Youth Development Football Competition which kicked-off at the World Bank Primary School field.
The championship which is ably powered by Hon Chidi ‘Okara’ Anukam popularly addressed as “I know Okara” is designed to fish talents in the area as well as to help foster peace and unity among the youths in New-Owerri.
In his opening speech, Okara stated that his drive towards the sponsorship of the tournament is born out of his experience while he was growing up adding that since God has blessed him in the society, that he can only but give back to the society by putting smile across the faces of people around him through football.
He described the game as a unifying factor and vowed to continue improving the life of the youths in his area through football which according to him has changed the life of poor individuals, turning them to millionaires.
In the opening game of the tournament, Control Fc (Control 1) played out a 1 1 draw with their counterparts from Concord 1 known as Green Environment
A release from the Local Organizing Committee chairman, Frank Ndubuisi Igbokwe (Coach Lasisi), reveals that 16 teams divide into four groups of four teams will be vying for the converted trophy and the honor of being the maiden champion of New-Owerri.
The teams are, Control Fc, Green Environment, Young Strikers, Emirate Stars, Diamond Fc, Averters Fc, Fracky City (Sight & Services), Galaxy Fc, Sailors Fc (Area M), Imo Housing Fc, Claret Fc (Area A), Federal Housing Fc, Blue Tigers Fc and Supreme Fc (Concord 2).

Association of Ex-Footballers and Friends on Saturday February 1 inaugurated its first elected executive members that will see to the affairs of the association for the next three years.
Addressing members of the ex-footballers before the inauguration rituals, the interim president Mr Alex Ekwereike (former captain Iwuanyanwu National) thanked his colleagues for exhibiting matured and disciplined character during and after the election period thanking specially the electoral body for discharging their duties diligently.
Also speaking, the Secretary of the association, Mr Chuks Dike (Coachy), epressed his happiness to God who has made everything possible adding that the current peace and unity existing among the members signifies that more good things will soon follow.
He however took time to congratulate the winners of what he described as a credible election all the best of luck while urging them to keep the flame of peace burning.
In his acceptance speech, the newly elected president, Hon Neville Okere who spoke on behalf of his colleagues promised members that they’ve not made any mistake in returning him as the president (elected) adding that his regime ensure that the association’s constitution will be made available to every member as soon as possible.
Speaking further to Trumpeta, Okere explained that the association was born out of the need for ex-footballers to always work together and see how they can help themselves with one thing or the other, stating that the friends added to the name of the association is to however retain the relationship between the fans and footballers who have been with them during their playing days till date.
He continued by saying that the association which is two years old among many other programs have concluded plans to honor players of Heartland Fc who distinguish themselves in their home games while it’s presence will be driven to all the 27 Local Government Areas of Imo State to make the ex-footballers in the rural area have a continued working relationship.
