The Nigerian Super eagles have moved up five places from to 47th spot in the December ranking made public on Wednesday by the world football governing body, FIFA.

Nigeria, who were ranked 57th last month, however maintain her 10th position in the African ranking, with  Burundi making the highest leap of 24 places to 104th in the world and 27th in Africa.

The Stephen Keshi- tutored team’s improvement on the monthly ranking would not come as a surprise to followers of the game. The Eagles recorded 3-1 victory over South American Nation Venezuela on 15th of November, 2012.

The match that was played in Miami, Florida in United State Of America fell within the month under review.

Cote d’ Ivorie still sit on top of the African ranking, as the Nation moves a step to 14th in the world, while Algeria is Africa’s second best team and 19th in the world.

Mali maintained her third position in the African ranking, but the west African Nation is now ranked 25th in the world, as they moved three place from 28th in November ranking.

The top ten teams on the world ranking remained unchanged as Spain will finish the year at the summit for the fifth time in succession, followed by Germany, Argentina and Italy.

The mover of the year goes to Colombia for the second time since the FIFA/coca-cola world ranking was introduced in 1993. Los cafeteros finished 2011, in 36th, but thanks to six wins, one draw and only one defeat to end 2012 as the 5th best team in the world.

Nigeria will have to do very well at the 2013 AFCON games in South Africa come January if they want to get back to the top ten like they did in 1994 when they were ranked 5th in the world.

Perhaps winning the African cup of Nations would be a good direction for a good beginning to get back to the top.
