The planned intention to seek for a second term by Hon Victor Mere, member representing Owerri Municipal State in the Imo State House of Assembly is raising dust in the municipality.
Mere has been rumoured to have intensified underground moves to seek for a second term, though he is yet to publicly unveil his position. Trumpeta learnt that his aspiration is raising dust in the area as such ambition strongly alters the zoning formula in the municipality.
Two political blocs, Azuizii and Azuahia share political offices in Owerri Municipality and it was gathered that the Assembly seat in the area has rotated between the blocs since 1999.
It is therefore expected that Azuahia bloc should produce the next Assembly representative.
Efforts by this Newspaper to speak to Hon Mere on his perceived ambition was futile as at press time, but a source to the lawmaker confirmed that he is interested for a second term.
He was alleged to have held nocturnal meetings and consultations with some APGA elements sympathetic to the cause of the APC in the area.
At one of such meetings held last month, some APGA stalwarts, including Ward Chairmen were opposed to his intention to re-run as it negates the political arrangement in the municipality.
They were also said to have expressed misgivings over the lawmaker’s indifferent approach to issues in his domain, and not carrying them along.
“It is now he is remembering us, after he abandoned us for a long period. I am surprised he says he wants to contest, because we thought he was no longer interested in politics anymore judging from his behaviour” a party stalwart told Trumpeta.
Hon Mere has come under severe criticisms from stakeholders in the area over his poor representation in the House which range from lack of consultation with leaders and inability to organize a constituency briefing for his constituents.
Meanwhile, this Newspaper observed that some aspirants from Azuahia bloc, comprising Amawom and Umuororonjo villages are putting forward their sons to vie for the municipality Assembly seat in 2015, in line with the zoning arrangement in the area.
