Cllr. Mbachu-Ogbuebile Charges Politicians To Live Up Expectations …Cautions Electorates Against Vote Selling, Buying
By: Tochi Onyeubi
The former Mayor of Waltham Forest, East London, Councillor Ann Mbachu-Ogbuebile has charged politicians ahead of the 2019 general elections to live up to the expectations of the electorates.
Speaking in Owerri recently, she said politicians are known to hold the bull by the horn in rolling out good people oriented policies to benefit the masses, according to her, "carrying the people along in consideration why such policies were made".
She maintained that politics should not only be played with human face but also should be a platform where the masses have a voice in the scheme of things.
"First and foremost, I think politics should be power to the people and not for the person. It should be where masses have the majority say, you can see typical examples in France, Germany and even America. These are areas where the masses interest supersedes interest of few", she stressed.
The dogged politician, who contested keenly to become the first black female Mayor of London Borough of Waltham Forest and first female Mayor of London of Igbo descent, bemoaned the tide in Nigeria politics where vote buying and selling is prevalent, owing it to hunger, poverty and lack of foresight.
"Peoples conscience are bought over due to hunger and poverty. A situation where one accepts for instance four thousand Naira to vote in the wrong candidate, that's one thousand a year! If you're good with money, it lasts for one month. To what benefit?? What happens to the bigger picture? I always tell people to shun the mindset of Now, Me, Myself but always consider generations born and unborn". She said.
Worried about the damage such action has done the governance system, she advised Imolites to cast their voting lens in the selection process of key leadership positions from the criteria of transparency, accountability and openness.
Speaking about women participation in Nigeria politics, the Okwelle born politician who recalled her advent into politics said she was largely influenced by her mother, noting that, what women are currently doing is what they have, adding that women should strive to do more, to prove they can perform.
She reaffirmed the belief that women are seen, not heard, pointing out that the system has not been favourable to Nigeria women in politics.

Prince Igwe, who made the call in a press statement he personally signed, with the title: "A Passionate Appeal To The Great And Good People Of Orlu And Okigwe Zones To Support Owerri Zone For The Actualization Of The Mandate To Govern Imo State", pointed out that for the mantra of equity, justice and fairness to be meaningful and purposeful to Imo people, it will be appropriate and proper that a governorship candidate from Owerri zone should be supported and given the mandate and mantle to govern the state this time.
According to him: "We surely do need your total support and full backing to be able to actualize our long delayed and overdue but rightly deserved goal of becoming the governor of Imo state.
"You will also agree with me that in all ramifications, 'Power belongeth unto God and He alone can make or mar'. We all do believe and hold that even God has ordained an Owerri candidate for the seat", adding that the people of Owerri zone will not forget their sacrifice, support, and efforts and would definitely reciprocate accordingly and appropriately.
Prince Igwe, a top player in the marine, oil and gas industry, who aspired to represent Owerri zone in the red chambers on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC), further recommended former Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives and gubernatorial candidate of the People's Democratic- Party (PDP), Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha, as the most qualified, most focused, and visionary, among those jostling to occupy the Douglas House, emphatically stating: "Let us make the mandate real. PDP Recaptures Orsu, Orlu, Oru East Reps As Supplementary Election Holds in Okigwe zone
The seat garnered by the People’s Democratic Party PDP in Imo State after the Presidential/National Assembly elections have increased with the capture of Oru East, Orlu and Orsu Federal Constituency.
The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC Monday released the signal that PDP’s Jerry Alagbaoso wins, dispelling earlier reports that it was inconclusive.
INEC had earlier according to reports declared the result of the federal constituency inconclusive owing to violence, snatching of electoral materials and mutilation of figures.
But yesterday, the electoral body reversed itself to announce the PDP candidate winner even as other candidates in the race have declared it a rape on democracy.
The announcement to declare Alagbaoso winner was made public after the candidates were invited for briefing on the way forward about the election. The REC after quoting some sections of the electoral act cancelled the areas for the re-run and declared Jerry Alagbaoso winner of the election.
Meanwhile, according to the Independent National Electoral Commission, the Supplementary elections will take place in Imo North Senatorial district, Okigwe South and Okigwe North federal constituencies.
The commission had declared elections inconclusive in the affected areas after violence, snatching of electoral materials and mutilation of figures marred the exercise.
This was even as political thugs set ablaze INEC’s office in Imo North senatorial district, heightening tension in the area.
The INEC spokesperson in the state, Emmanuella Opara , said that the commission was ready to complete elections in the affected areas .
She said that the supplementary elections would hold alongside governorship and State Assembly elections which hold this weekend.
Okorocha in Fresh Trouble As Plot To Stop EFCC, Police Search House Fails Courts Says IGP, Anti Graft Body Have Right
Efforts by the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to stop the police and Economic Financial Crime Commission, EFCC from searching his house have been thrown overboard as the court rules otherwise.
Apparently kicking against invasion of his house by men of the Nigeria police and EFCC for search purposes, Governor Okorocha went to court to stop them.
But the outcome of the court is not in his favour which has given the police and EFCC authorities to search his residence.
The Federal High Court sitting in Jos has thrown out a N1.25 billion damages suit filed by Gov. Rochas Okorocha, against the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) and the EFCC.
Okorocha filed the suit against the IGP and EFCC in November 2018 for allegedly invading and ransacking his house in Jos.
Delivering judgment, Justice Musa Kurya, dismissed Okoracha’s application for lacking in merit.
“Even though there was no record of how the search warrant was obtained but a search warrant dated May 3, 2017 from a Magistrate has been attached as exhibit before this court.
“Whether due process was followed or not at obtaining the search warrant, there is no proof otherwise to its genuineness and the breach of sections 34 – 37 of the UN human rights and African Charter.
“Consequently, judgment is hereby entered in favour of the respondents. The applicant’s claims are hereby refused.
“I hereby declare that the application of the applicant lacked merit and is hereby dismissed and cost is not awarded to either parties in this suit, ’’ the Judge declared. reports has it that Okorocha alleged that the IGP and the anti-graft agency breached his fundamental human rights following the May 3, 2017 invasion
Also joined in the suit are the Commissioner of Police Plateau, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice.
The Governor prayed the court to declare the action of the police and EFCC as “illegal, null and void’’ and award his client the sum of N1.25 billion as general damages because there was no valid court warrant for such an exercise.
But the IGP and the EFCC, through their counsel, Edwin Inegbenoise and Muktar Ali-Ahmed, pleaded with the court to dismiss the governors application for lack of merit since a court warrant was obtained for the search on his residence in accordance with the law.
Orlu Zone Senate Seat: Okorocha Stole My Mandate, Says PDP Candidate Jones Onyeriri
The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in Imo -West Senatorial District, Jones Onyereri , has claimed that he won the election which the state Governor , Rochas Okorocha, was declared as the winner .
Onyereri , who was reacting to a statement credited to the governor , where Okorocha described him as being “too small to contest against him in an election , ” said the governor ’s statement was “watery. ”
Onyereri , who is a serving member of the House of Representatives , said , “The governor ’s statement was too watery and it is a sheer distraction from the burning issue of his massive rigging during last Saturday’s poll in Imo -West Senatorial District .”
Online news report obtained by Trumpeta quoted Onyeriri to have said “I challenge the governor for a free -and- fair election in Imo- West where independent election monitoring observers will keep the records.”
Onyereri said it was wrong for the governor to claim he had nothing to show for his eight -year stay at the National Assembly.
“My wealth of experience, leadership sagacity and social values have become the template for aspiring federal lawmakers in Nigeria. With over ten bills and 12 sponsored motions to my credit, how would any sane and rational informed person adjudge sterling performance in legislative business,” he asked, adding that he would reclaim “his stolen mandate” from the governor through the tribunal.
But the governor, who reacted through his Chief Press Secretary, Sam Onwuemeodo, said the PDP senatorial candidate was not his match in politics.
