In fulfilling part of his constitutional obligations as an Executive Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma of Imo State has assented into Law the Bill aimed at increasing the retirement age of teachers from 60 years to 65 years of age, and from 35 years to 40 years of service.

The Governor attended to the Bill yesterday, November 22, 2023 after its legislative passage at the last plenary session of the Imo State House of Assembly on November 16, 2023.

The Lawmakers of the 10th House had debated and considered it expedient to domesticate the Law in Imo State after it had already been passed by the National Assembly.

It was learnt that the Bill signed into Law by Uzodimma would ensure that all teachers in the State would no longer retire at the age of 60, but now at 65, as well as to retire after 40 years of service as against the former norm of 35 years.

In his statement while appending his signatures on the documents yesterday at the Government House, Owerri, Uzodimma described the bill as a significant one which has the interest of the Masses at heart.

“I have given my approval to a significant bill that extends the retirement age for teachers in Imo State to 65 years of age or after 40 years of service, whichever comes first. This decision aligns with my steadfast commitment to preserving the wealth of experience and knowledge within our educational system.

“I extend my sincere appreciation to the Imo State House of Assembly (IMHA), for spearheading this commendable legislation. Their dedication to enhancing the education sector is evident and I believe this move will serve as a powerful motivator for our teachers.

“Our teachers play a pivotal role in shaping the future and by extending their professional tenure, we aim to ensure the continuity of their invaluable contributions. I am confident that they will approach their responsibilities with renewed vigor and dedication, ultimately benefiting the entire educational landscape of Imo State”.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon Chike Olemgbe, the Majority Leader, Rt. Hon. Kanayo Onyemaechi, other Lawmakers and the Clerk of the House, Chinelo Adaora Emeghara Esq. were present at the event.
