Whisper to Humanity champions Support for Igbo Cultural preservation

Whisper to Humanity, a non-governmental organization (NGO), recently organized a Spell Heritage program focused on the importance of promoting the Igbo language, culture, and tradition.
The event, held in Imo State, brought together pupils and students from various schools across the state in celebration of Igbo heritage and identity.
Speaking to journalists, the founder of Whisper to Humanity, Mary Jacob Okwuosa, expressed her delight at the positive impact the program has had since its inception.
According to her, the initiative, which began five years ago, was inspired by her concern that many children struggled to communicate fluently in their native language.
“Before now, I noticed that many of our children found it difficult to speak Igbo properly,” Okwuosa said. “But with the introduction of the Spell Heritage program, more pupils and students have developed an interest in learning and using the language. This is our way of giving back to the society we come from.”
She further noted ,that one of her greatest achievements is seeing children practice and converse in Igbo within their schools while preparing for the competition.
Okwuosa also expressed excitement over the increased participation of schools in this year’s edition, describing it as a reflection of the growing commitment to preserving Igbo culture.
“We want our children to appreciate their language and heritage,”
“This program is a step in the right direction toward changing the narrative that Igbo culture and language are not important.” she added.
Rt. Hon. Amb. (Mrs.) Uju Onwudiwe, former member of the Imo State House of Assembly, commended Whisper to Humanity for its dedication, describing the initiative as “a noble and encouraging effort toward cultural preservation.” She also advised the children to hold firmly to the lessons they have learned, assuring them that their concerns would be addressed.
Similarly, Dr. (Mrs.) Adim-Madumere Chinwe Uche, Director of UNICEF and other NGOs at IMSUBEB in Imo State, lauded the initiative, calling it “a timely intervention.”
“Our children are
losing interest in their language and culture while embracing foreign ones,” she said. “It’s heartwarming to see organizations like Whisper to Humanity redirecting young minds back to their roots.”
In appreciation, Miss Nwalo Success from Community Comprehensive Secondary School, Umuowa Ngor/Okpala, thanked the founder for the opportunity to participate, noting that the experience boosted their confidence in speaking Igbo.
A teacher from Nnaorie Secondary Technical School, Ngor Okpala Mr.Obi Chucks , described the Spell Heritage program as “a testament to the importance of preserving our cultural heritage and promoting indigenous language among young people.”
Other participants echoed similar sentiments, commending Whisper to Humanity for its efforts and urging the government and stakeholders to support the initiative to ensure its sustainability.
The event featured a range of cultural activities, including traditional dances, Igbo writing and recitation, drama, and discussions on challenges faced by students and how the organization has contributed to improving their academic and cultural lives.
At the end of the competition, Comprehensive Secondary School, Nkume Njaba, emerged as the overall winner, followed by Ngor High School, Ngor/Okpala, and Community Secondary School, Umuowa Ngor/Okpala. The winners were presented with prizes for their outstanding performances.
